Out-of-staters Class of '09

Man, you guys make me wish I was 18 again...going back to college. It is so exciting.

Becky, aren't you sort of young to enjoy pina coladas? Actually, where I come from, everybody drinks starting at a young age, so it is ok.

Karido, if you like freckly redheads from CT, I know just the girl for you. But you cannot ask her 27 intrusive question about Michigan! hehe Actually, you come from NY, not NC...wrong N altogether. Sorry.

Swooshstar, for some reason, I though you were a guy! LOL If you like shopping, check out the Somerset Collection. It is an awesome mall only 30 miles from Ann Arbor. Ann Arbor has a decent mall too (Briarwood).

Reeses, you do not count since you are an in-stater! LOL Just kidding. By the way, did you get my PM. I never trust those things!

SqUirgleZQ, you remind me of myself..that's a good thing! I used to watch the Iron Chef religiously! LOL I love fine dining and travel, so you are cool with me. If you decide to major in BME, look up a professor called James Miller. He is a friend of mine. Just tell him you are a friend of Alex Tabet, and he will look out for you.

Umardarr, remember you are a Wolverine now...not more cheering for those Bucknutts from down south you hear! You are better than that! LOL

Jimmy if you want to say it right, it is "sheesha" or "argueeleh"...not a hookah! We Arabs take our waterpipes seriously you know?!

SW, welcome to the family.

ASDF and Chrisay, I hope you join the gang.

Haha! Yes I know it's also called sheesha but over here all the bars call it hookah! Do you know if they have any in Ann Arbor?

haha alexandre, if you reeeead my other posts, you'll see that i've never had a pina colada. however, i do enjoy the song that pays homage to it.

i have some questions for you - how many umichers are out-of-staters? what's the deal with housing? how is ann arbor? will i be the only freckly redhead from ct? what's the deal with the residential college? ??????????????????

thanks, alex.

Jimmy, last time I checked, Ann Arbor did not have a sheesha joint...but Dearborn, which is only 30 minutes away, has like 90,000 fellow A-rabs! LOL So I am willing to bet you will have plenty of sheesha joints there.

Becky, 30% of Micigan undegrads are out-of-state and another 5% are international. In other words, 8,000 undergrads are from out-of-state and 1,500 undergrads are international. And the town of Ann Arbor is very cosmopolitan. Housing is adequate at Michigan, but it is not great. Ann Arbor is AWESOME. I have lived in 7 countries and travelled to over 40 countries and Ann Arbor is one of my favorite places on Earth. I return at least once a year. I was there in November of 2004 and I will be there in September of this year. The residential college is good for students who like a LAC-type structure. If you are very liberal and quirky, the RC is for you.

forgive me, guys, but tell me what a hookah (sheesha) bar is?

It is a Middle Eastern passtime! LOL In the Middle East, there are many cafes that serve waterpipes.

http://www.hookah-shisha.com/generic14.html

It is a simple (but usually quite large) pipe whereby the tobacco is purified by water. The tobacco comes in many flavors, from plain to apple to honey to grape etc... In the Middle East, it is HUGE. People sit down and smoke that stuff just like Americans go to pubs and bars and drink beer.

Jimmy is in my good book. The boy knows where it's at! LOL

Alexandre - No, I didn't get it.

frecklybecky - I'm for certain going in for Communication Studies. However, I also put on my app that I wanted computer science as well, but I don't think so anymore. I'm not a big fan of programming.

Nevermind, Alexandre. I got it. Forgive me. I'm a little slow these days.

hookah is so illllll, good to know there are some palces near ann arbor with it. last night i went to my friend's house who is israeli and he has his own hookah. it was so good

yeaaa DEFINITELY not a guy alexandre! haha...so guys, to tell you the truth i was a little (or a lot) bummed out about not getting into UVA...but of course theres plenty of awesome things about going to michigan, and one of those is i have a reason to get another pair of Ugg boots....! i was at the mall today looking for a prom dress and i convinced my mom to buy me another pair before i leave for college...so i'll have my old pair to wear when its raining or snowing so that they can get dirty, and a new pair to keep clean and wear on dry days. i have a thing about getting my shoes dirty. anyway, i'm not a fan for pina coladas or hookahs...how about dunkin donuts? is there one near by?

oh yea i forgot...does michigan have like surveys to fill out for housing to match up roommates? i heard that they don't....and thus im a liiiiiiittle worried about ending up with someone i wont get along with...

swooshstar, they do not have a survey to match you up with a roommate--they just ask you about your allergies and about smoking. i was a little dissapointed that it doesnt go more in-depth than that.

yea sw3 thats a little sketch...they should ask about interests and personality and stuff, i know lehigh university has a really long questionairre that is so detailed that most roommates end up loving each other

i totally agree with you. It's unfair and not a smart way to handle the housing..when i started filling out my application, i was surprised at the lack of questions i had to answer. do any of you guys know where you want to live next year?

I'm pretty sure that I want to live in Central Campus next year, after Freshmen year I expect to live off-campus though. Anyway, let's try to get that AIM chat up! My s/n is heyyouchichimon.

I'm from out of state as well (NY)
I think I'll be going to Michigan (LSA) as well if I don't get into Duke or Stanford which I don't think I'll get into anyway......

Hello, I'm from Illinois, and I might attend UM in the fall. I play percussion and I was accepted as a music major. The tuition -is- quite daunting for a state school. I'm also considering UW Madison, UI-Champaign, and UChicago. The only reason I'm considering -not- going to UC is due to the lack of a major music program... But UM still sits at the top of my list (grappling with UW...)

Don't look at Michigan as merely a "state school". Michigan's reputation, academic quality, resources and attention to undergraduate education match those of most top 20 pritate universities.

Agreed. And although UW-Madison is a very good school, it has nothing compared to the resources of UM-Ann Arbor. Only at very few places can you find UM's combination of prestigious academics and music, and nowhere else can you find a school that has all that plus (arguably) the strongest football team in the country. So whether you're a scholar, a musician, or an athlete, or whether you'd care to dabble in all three, UM is perfectly suited for you.

Somerset is an awesome mall. But it's most definitely more than 30 miles from AA. Unless you drive like a maniac it takes an hour. Briarwood isn't very good. I'd try Twelve Oaks in Novi if you want a good compromise.
