I live in Southern California and I'm going to UCF this fall, was just wondering how many other OOS are gonna join me and if anyone with past experience can tell me about the culture shock, lol.

My D will be there this Fall. We’re from New Jersey. The only culture shock she will experience is the opportunity to walk around in shorts and flip flops in October, November or February, March, something rarely ever done here in NJ. She’s looking forward to what Orlando has to offer, as well as the warm sunshine and palm trees.

I’m from Mississippi, so it’s not going to be that big of a change for me this Fall.
Only that there is ALWAYS going to be something to do in Orlando.
In little ol’ Gulfport, you have the beach… and that’s about it.

Yeah, I’ve been kind of worried that I’ll be 3000 miles away from all my friends but it should be a cool change of pace.

What part of CA are you from? Florida is much different from California. People are approachable and our lifestyle is more laid back. While the professors will not appreciate or tolerate you coming in late, the normal for Florida seems to be no-one is on time to anything.

Other things I have found and experienced in the south is that people say hello to total strangers while walking down the street. We make eye contact and smile as acknowledgement. Service is so much better in the south than in California.

Regardless of the difference, it will be a good experience.

I’m from Ventura, about 45 minutes north of L.A. I was born in Florida and I’ve lived all over but my high school experience has been here. It’s good to hear that people are friendlier. I have to say I like the fast paced rhythm of california and I figured Florida would be somewhat similar.

I am going to UCF this fall from Asheville, North Carolina.

I’m going to be heading down from Rhode Island, I’m glad to see I’m not the only one not from Florida or a neighboring state. :)

if any of the OOS students reading this are going to be in the Burnett Honors College, are you planning on going to the Honors orientation or the oos one is august?

I’m most likely going to UCF. Either UCF of UF, not entirely sure yet. I’m from Long Island. and to answer the question above, i’m pretty sure you have to go to honors orientation unless you have a good reason for not being able to. I got into honors too.

Yeah, out-of-stater here, too (Eastern WA). I’d really strongly suggest you look at LEAD Scholars–it made all the difference for getting me connected with friends at UCF. If you don’t get involved with something, it’s going to be a way less enjoyable and worthwhile experience.

what is the LEAD program, exactly? and I’ve been considering joining a fraternity and will definitly be participating in club sports. I hope I can get to know a lot of people that way since I’m going to a completely new area 3000 miles away, where I don’t know anybody, haha.

How much financial aid did UCF offer and how much will you OOS students have to pay to Attend UCF?

OOS national merit finalists get a bigger scholarship than in-state: still free. i dont know about non-merit finalists.
