If you don’t want to go to a “nerd” school, I’d suggest eliminating basically everything on that list of yours. You’re in London, so perhaps you weren’t aware that those are very competitive schools that serve mostly “nerds” and hard-workers.

Try Michigan State. It’s a reasonably good school with generous admissions standards (at least from what I’ve seen in-state) and it’s huge. I hung out there with a friend once on Halloween and the streets were packed with all sorts of drunken idiots.

I would. And that’s only because you have to have really good grades to get into those schools. But I mean if you’re going to call the ivies nerd schools, then you really should call the above nerd schools.

Michigan, UCLA, Penn State, and UVA are gonna be fine. Berkeley’s also a state school but it’s pretty hipster. Don’t look at Michigan State, it’s not a reasonably good school.

eziamm, don’t bash Michigan State…we all know you are a UofM kid (or wannabe, not even in college yet), you don’t have to act like many of the pretentious idiots that go there. While Michigan State may not have the sterling reputation that UofM does, it can certainly hold its own in excellent academic programs (and its top 30-something public school ranking is nothing to be ashamed of). Anyways…

Penn State’s party scene = amazing. I’ve been to a few of University of Michigan’s parties…they are definitely decent, but nothing in comparison to Penn State or the parties at other big 10 schools. Same goes for UVA or UCLA. George Washington U - I stayed there over the summer, not quite the same as during school semester, but the bar/club scene is pretty fun (not as many of the traditional college parties, but more city-life based). Northeastern & Boston U’s party scenes are also pretty sweet I’ve heard…don’t know anything about Boston College but I’d guess that aside from its religious affiliation they still do know how to party. Berkeley has its hipster scene, while NYU has its artsy city scene…not quite the traditional partiers but they’d be fun as well.

I wouldn’t rule out any school on your list because of its nerdiness, merely because if the school lacks the traditional college party atmosphere, the city that each college is surrounded in (ie Boston, DC, NYC) definitely would make up for it (although that would be not as fun for the under 21 crowd unless you have a convincing fake).

I wouldn’t call Berkeley or UCLA party schools, there are some pretty hardworking people there. There obviously is a percentage of people who party frequently there, but still…they’re both good schools that are hard to get into. They’re not nerd schools either; sure, Berkeley’s engineering and business is killer, but there’s still a good mix of people.

Don’t listen to the people who tell you the party scene won’t be as fun in a city without a convincing fake. I go to school in DC and at least in DC there are many MANY nightclubs that are 18+ not 21+ which is a great benefit of being in a city. I don’t attend GW, but I do party there quite a bit and have tons of fun. If you are a nerd who hangs out with people who don’t party then you won’t have fun. If you know which dorms to go to and what rooms you’ll be suprised what’s going on behind closed doors. When you get tired of the on campus parties venture to the clubs. Plus alot of clubs have open bars from 10-11 and even though I’m 18 I’ve never been carded at an open bar. Plus the alcohol is good stuff like Ciroc and its FREE! :)

A top school can be a party school. Just because people prioritize and get excellent grades doesn’t mean they don’t party hard. Such a generalization on this site that people that party don’t take their grades seriously. Can’t say I partied last semester, and what I saw was the people that partied pretty regularly also did well on their schoolwork.
