Outdoor Action

Does anyone know what date Outdoor action starts and when the 1st day of classes begin ?
In additon for those doing Outdoor Action when can they start using their meal plan ?

Per Dr Oneal - For outdoor action arrive and move in Sunday August 8; program starts with check-in mid afternoon, and evening activities.
Program ends Friday night August 13; possible extension to Sat. morning if we camp the last night.

If you want to do OA, then get your app in now. OA only accepts 40 students. Right now, about half are taken. The Honors office said that they expect all spots to be gone by May.

Indoor Action (I think) accepts 100 students.

Application has been sent and received. Do you know what the food arrangements would be for the week ? Do classes start on the 16th ?

Classes begin August 18. All other freshmen usually move in on August 14, with the upperclassmen arriving on the 15th. With Alabama Action, lunch was provided at the schools where the students worked, and dinner was at various T-Town restaurants each night.

Nice! Did they provide transportation to these restaurants and to the schools the kids worked at? Will the kids need to bring cash for these restaurant outings, or is that included in the 200 dollar registration fee?

So looking forward to all of this!

Transportation to the schools – yes

To the restaurants – no, but the kids who have cars drive other kids there or they ride with the student leaders in the group

They do need to bring additional money for dinner, as it’s not included in the registration fee.

At least for Alabama Action, there was transportation to the daily events. When going to restaurants and the final ceremony, we had to carpool, but everyone was able to find a ride with somebody else, just not always the same person for each day. Alabama Action splits into smaller dinner groups because having a group of 100+ people go to the same restaurant at the same time would not be the best idea.

I never paid for a dinner during Alabama Action as it was included in our fee.

OK, I just posed the meal question to Dr. Oneal, director of Outdoor Action, and here’s her response: “Breakfast and lunch and about 3 dinners are covered in the fee. 2-3 dinners will be small group dinners “on the Strip” at Mexican, Chinese, Wings type restaurants. Cash will be need for those 2-3 meals. They’re informal, student-friendly restaurants. The meal plan will be activated by that time, so [your son] can use his dining dollars and meal card as needed.”

D’s email confirming her OA registration read

“You will move into your permanent room on Aug. 8,
and the program will begin that afternoon.”

So, are they moving into their PERMANENT permanent room that day, as in their fall semester dorm room?

Yes, they are referring to the student’s fall semester dorm room. It’s an interesting word choice, but that’s what it means.

My check was cashed but I have not heard from the Alabama Action to see if my son got in? Does a cashed check mean he was accepted? I am assuming it does.

It should mean that he was accepted. I’d think UA would call you if Alabama Action was full and ask how they could return your check. Alabama Action has less of a maximum enrollment than Outdoor Action because OA involves going to some environmentally sensitive areas.

Be sure to watch your bama (your son’s) email. My son has received some communication in that account regarding AA.

My son registered for OA a couple of weeks ago and within the week he was notified he’d been accepted. Are the kids checking their UA email?
