Outdoor Action

DS got his syllabus and required readings by crimson email today. No rest for the weary…DS just graduated this past Saturday! He’s actually excited to dive in.

you guys are lucky. looking back at posts from last year the alabama action people didn’t have their packet as of July 23rd which seems really late because there is required reading. hopefully that won’t be the case this year.

D received an email on mybama with the syllabus and required reading attached. If you haven’t received your Outdoor action envelope via snail mail check for Dr Oneal’s email.

…what are some of the examples of the required readings?

I thought Outdoor Action was basically like Habitat for Humanity but for the environment and is a great way to meet people.

I plan on doing OA or Alabama Action(if I go to Bama of course), I’ll have to see which program I think I’ll like better. Just curious about what books they make you read.

Can I assume correctly that Outdoor Action & Alabama Action would have separate mailings and reading lists? Any insight into when the AA info would come out (possibly late July like last year?)

RobD: My son said he got his Alabama Action information in mid July. The readings were enclosed in the information.

Yes, Alabama Action and Outdoor action have completely different reading lists and assignment(s). Unless they’ve changed things, there is some readings and either some journal entries or a final paper that’s similar to the journals in what you need to write about. The assignments are not difficult and are more surveys and preparation for guest speaker presentations. I’d expect AA info to come out earlier this year, but a quick e-mail to honors wouldn’t be a bad idea. Also, the readings will probably be posted online.

The book for outdoor action is Hot, Flat, and Crowded: Why We Need a Green Revolution and How It Can Renew America. There are 5 chapters they are supposed to read. Also have 2 to 3 questions that require writing on each chapter.

As always, Thanks guys!

Dr Oneal included an email attachment with the required chapters, but amazon has used copies “like new” and “very good” for $.01 and up plus $3.99 shipping.

Bump!

Has anyone received an itinerary for Outdoor action? I saw that the AA people have a schedule for Sunday afternoon and I’m just wondering if we missed it in a previous email. I don’t think any details are on the FB page.

Any recommendations for a good bug deterrent?

Lastly, anyone others completely bummed after reading Hot, Flat & Crowded? D was like “we’re doomed, what’s the point?”

Timeflew:

Haven’t received an itinerary to Outdoor Action other than the attachments that Dr. O’Neal has previously sent out to the students. From past experience with my daughter, it started later in the day on Sunday. From what my son told me, they are going to build a wooden bridge over a stream.

Same here, everything has been emails. Remember to pack shoes that can get really dirty and wet as they will be working in a stream. I’m thinking my DS’s boy scout hiking boots or an old pair of running shoes. Also, my son calls cotton shirts “death cloth” as far as working in very hot weather. We’re packing sun shirts and fast moisture wicking t-shirts. Also, the best bug deterrents are those with the highest percentage of DEET.

Haven’t been camping in years, but I like to use Cutters when I go birdwatching. If you have an Army Surplus Store nearby, they’ll have good bug sprays. The local one has all the scout stuff, so good camping supplies. I’d bet Cabelo’s or Bass Pro, if you have one nearby, would have good bug sprays as well. And yes, the most DEET is the best.

Here’s the scoop, as detailed in a July 11 letter we received:

“Check-in for Outdoor Action will begin in the Riverside Game Room on Sunday between 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. (Bring your liability waiver and emergency medical forms if you haven’t already submitted them). You’ll receive a welcome packet and meet some of the student leaders at the check-in. Your parents will not need to be present . . . Our evening’s activities will start at 5:00. We will provide dinner that night and have several other fun activities planned.”

I hear that the Outdoor Action group is cooking breakfast together every morning - how cool is that? Canoeing all day today. They should all know each other very well by the end of the week.
Getting info from D is like pulling teeth and I’m sitting on my hands this week to avoid texting while she settles in. I was happy to find out as much as I have.

timeflew, you know more than I do. My DS text me a few minutes ago to ask me a “hypothetical” question. “Have I had a recent tetanus shot?” I immediately text him to ask what happened. He said he cut his hand on a rope swing that had a metal handle. Guess he must have been swimming? Who knows??? He said they did canoe 4 miles today. That’s ALL I know…
