Outdoors Fun at Dartmouth

So, seeing as Dartmouth is smack of the great outdoors, with hiking trails, skiing, etc. any fellow outdoors lovers out there? What do you guys think of the rural location/outdoorsy emphasis of the school? Is it a good thing/bad thing for you? I'm a big fan of hiking/camping/skiing/backpacking myself, and just wanted to see if anyone else is similarly inclined.

It's a great thing. One of the major things attracting me to Dartmouth, really.

Yeah I love all that outdoors stuff. I also find it funny that they have a lumberjacking team (maybe it's a New England thing?); I think I might try that out.

It was the single major reason I applied. I hear Dartmouth has decent academics too :)

yeah, I'm with you guys. Most all of us will have to live our lives out in cities and suburbs...this is that one great shot at living in the heart of nature herself--probably years from now we will remember it as the high point of our miserable mundane (fighting traffic, looking for parking)existences...lol

Heart of nature? Sounds funny. I just read Heart of Darkness, and that's probably why.

Avoiding the miserable mundane existence can't be too hard? Can it? Do something dumb every now and then. I was riding my bike to a job fair this weekend, which included about a mile over sheer ice. I fell and scraped / bruised up my arm. I continued to the job fair, but I think potential employers may have been turned off from the blood. It hurt, but it wasn't mundane.

Maybe spending enough time outside away from the padded walls of society will present more opportunities for excitement.

Anyway. Who's planning on sleeping outside all summer?

Definitely, yes. I live (literally) on top of a nature preserve.

Anyone plannign on doing some rockclimbing?

"Anyway. Who's planning on sleeping outside all summer?"

Certainly no one at Yale, Penn, Columbia, Harvard or Brown... lol

LOL Kal...seriously.

Kiwi - you read Heart of Darkness? I'm sorry. lol.

i'll def sleep outside all summer, hike, SKI (YES YES YES YES YES!!!!), XC skiing is fun as long as you don't do it for like an entire day, rock climbing is great, kayaking/canoeing...oh wow it'd be amazing

seriously though. this 12% acceptance rate will make me feel better if i get rejected

The location/outdoors opportunities are what made me fall in love with Dartmouth. I live out in Toledo, Ohio, which is about as boring, dreary, and un-outdoorsy as you can get. I plan to vigorously hike, and attempt skiing, rock climbing, rowing crew, and much more. After living in Ohio for 13 years, Dartmouth and New Hampshire are like heaven to me.

P.S. I was born at YALE-New Haven hospital. Hope nobody will hold that against me ;)

So I have a Nalgene water bottle fetish, ever since I did a conservation trail crew and like everyone had multiple Nalgenes. Seems like outdoorsy-types carry them around everywhere.

Read Heart of Darkness for AP Lit couple months ago. Fun book...

Yeah, so this makes me feel hopeful, that other people enjoy hiking. I'll be camping out this summer. Should be fun. Anyone know anything about the DOC-sponsored pre-frosh outing trips?

hiking, kayaking...

nalgene = college, in Yale

ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!

It seems like there are a few people who row here. Is anyone planning on rowing at Dartmouth? Have you talked to any of the coaches?
