Outdoorsy but Not too Hippy?

Whitman does seems like a very good match for you. and a school that has 75% participation in Intramural sports and even a few frats and sororities can’t be labeled “hippy”.

I don’t know enough about politics to align with either side so I do not mind liberals unless they are pushing their views on me or constantly rallying etc., I am talking about hippies who do not shower often and have long hair and always preach about changing the world but mostly just smoke weed.

You guys have given me many good options but i would love to hear more!

Unless you choose a very conservative religious school, you’re going to find a range of viewpoints, hygiene, drug and alcohol use, etc., almost anywhere. You learn to school with your own kind of fishes and coexist with the others. Many campuses have substance-free dorms to offer a firewall, if you need that.

Keep in mind, though, that some of the schools you’re considering are very selective. About a quarter of the students Colorado College admitted this year were in the top one percent (1%) of their classes. As I recall, about a third or so were captains of at least one varsity team. Like Whitman, Colorado College also has a very high participation in intramural and recreational sports (as well as intercollegiate D1 and D3). Schools like Middlebury or Dartmouth are just as athletic, besides admitting students with even higher average test scores and exceptional ECs. So they must have been doing something besides smoking weed.

A few kids will turn out to be real stoners even at the most selective schools but for the most part, the hippie kids will have to be off in the library as many hours as everyone else to make it through.

By the way, you can’t assume most of the state universities on that Outdoor Magazine list are safeties for OOS applicants. UVa is very selective for OOS. Wisconsin and UCSD, among others, have excellent academic reputations and may be good “match” schools for you.

You are really foolish to use the ‘hippy’ stereotype that is in your head for a college criteria. At almost every college in the country there are people who smoke weed. You can’t tell by looking at them which ones they are. You will also find guys (mostly) who don’t shower, and they may or may not smoke weed. You will also find all kinds of haircuts, since fashion varies now…so you are telling us that the most important criteria in a college for you is how the guys wear their hair? That makes me think of another stereotype…

Dang, colorado college is more of a reach than i thought. But it sounds like a perfect fit for me!

how about university of colorado-boulder? it should be a match even as an out of state student…good sports and good mix of ppl

Ya Boulder seems like a good fit huh? Hopefully i get in. What are some other matches/ with good outdoors and academics?

Whitman would be a good fit. Check out their new climbing wall and outdoor program. It is definitely off the beaten path which is part of what makes it great.

I know whitman would be a good fit but I doubt i could get in and how many reaches can i have lol?

If a little marijuana smoke bothers you, Boulder is definitely not the place for you.

Of course, it is a huge school and you could probably find a niche quite nicely. Don’t let irrational fear of hippies hiding in trees scare you too much.

No most of my friends smoke weed so that is not the problem, I prefer moderates to extreme liberal in-your-face advocates with long greasy hair, but maybe those type people do not even exist anymore and when people call a college “hippie” it does not really mean what I think it does.

My opinion and it isn’t very strong: The hippies at the top colleges are mostly doing it as a fashion statement - an outward manifestation of the music they like and personal qualities they admire. This is not unlike hipsters and their style and music, country music people and the cowboy hats, etc. As students age they worry less about being overly connected to their tribe. Both my nieces went off to college with dreadlocks but they were gone by sophomore year.

Then you have to look at location. The hippies at Grinnell aren’t there by accident. They know how to get their work done, they were top of the class in high school, and they know how to be focused. Whereas the hippies at Prescott College are in an undemanding curriculum where there is a lot of talk about personal growth. Few graduate in 4 years and they don’t mind because it gives them lots more time for camping.

Oh boy am I going to get in trouble!

So what music do they like and what qualities do they admire? Maybe I am a hippie and I didn’t even know it!

You might look at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry -

[SUNY-ESF, SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry](http://www.esf.edu/admissions/programs.htm)

onethefly, I like you’re attitude! Indeed, maybe you’re a hippie and don’t even know it;-)

I would also toss in Bowdoin, Bates, and Colby. If you like skiing and natural scenery, maybe Cornell too.

Let’s be nice to OP. Like each and every one of us, OP is looking for a school where he can easily find people like himself and has said that some “hippies” are fine-- obviously not an anti-hippie person. All of the time people on CC make judgments about “nerdy” schools, “preppy” schools, “jock” schools, and when I was in the OP’s shoes I also shied away from “hippie” schools because I felt that I would stick out like a sore thumb.

Thanks unalove but do you think i could get in to bowdoin, bates or colby?

lol i just looked and i dont think there is any way i could get in to any of them

I second Cornell - Agricultural and Life Science - i think coming fronm Texas with a 2100+ is very much in your favor

That is very kind, but did I mention I am out of the top quarter and have only taken 2 AP classes? I definitely don’t think that is cornell caliber, but I would love to hear some other notable outdoor colleges
