I am currently a manufacturing engineering major, but was previously a geology major and am now considering going back to geology. If I do decide to switch back to geology I will move back in with my parents and attend the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in order to save for a masters (hopefully Peace Corps Masters International). But from the research I've done I can't get a straight answer on the job outlook for geologists. I've read the articles that say there's a demand yet when I search for jobs I find zip. I mean I'd like to believe the articles but where are the jobs, specifically in hydrogeology or geophysics?
So is it worth putting it all on the line, possibly not finding a job? The school I'm at now has a placement rate in the mid-90s, which is kind of hard to leave especially since I have a foot in the door in the manufacturing world. ...and this wouldn't be my first time transferring so I'm kind of worried that if this doesn't work out I am done.

I can give some advice here, but you really need to speak to a Geologist and an Engineer - I’m an Environmental Scientist.

An Engineering B.S. degree, IMO, has the best job outlook for all the non-medical science fields. Geology tends to go up-and-down with the petroleum industry.
