I was asking someone which colleges they applied for and she listed 13! So I started wondering, who here, on CC, has applied to the most colleges? I'm obviously far from it - only 4 to show. :]

ok, I guess you can't really justify applying to 3 colleges just because they are in the same consortium...but the UCs are really ONE app, so...

Actually, no, because I completed CUNY Honors and SUNY-Bing apps since Honors had an early deadline and Bing was rolling but I withdrew those apps before anything happened.

6 for .me. UC's, Stanford, and USC. Stanford was the dream, but not anymore. Now it's hard to find a reason to be excited, at least on this website. I'm sure I'll be happy wherever I go. USC came through and I might get a scholarship, so it's a toughie choosing

I'm guessing that I was the person fhshortie08 was referring to who applied to 13 places.
The app. fees were not as horrendous as you'd expect, since often they are waived if you apply online.
Oh yeah...I AM NOT AN OVERACHEIVER! lol :D You'd see that if you saw my lackluster stats on page 3 of the "What are my chances?" thread. The reason I applied to so many schools was because I felt I wouldn't get accepted ANYWHERE because of bad grades in junior year (the most important year). But having received 6 acceptances so far, that didn't turn out to be the case!

I applied to 15. I'm glad I did. Yes app fees were high, but they bought me an additional 4-5 months to decide exactly what I want. By now, I've decided I don't want to attend some of the schools to which I applied. I think this is better than not having applied to a school which I may deeply now deeply wish to attend. Back in October/November, I just didn't know.

I applied to schools public and private, large and small in just about every part of the country. Some may attribute this to a poorly guided college search, I call it foresight; covering my bases if preferences are to change.

With admissions rates getting lower and lower and decisions seemingly more arbitrary, I think it's not irrational to throw one's hat in at more schools than would in the past have been considered "acceptable." It's a vicious cycle, yes, as this type of behavior will only lower acceptance rates, but I'm riding the cycle instead of being crushed by it.

not everyone has access to a computer or internet

some people are computer illiterate

some people i guess just like to do it the 'old fashioned way'

i had a few colleges where i had to use a paper application because the website wouldn't let me use a college board application fee waiver online

22 is crazy!!!!! I thought one of my friends who applied to 17 was over the top... I only applied to 9 and three were UCs and three were common app.

Columbia
Dartmouth
Amherst
Duke
UC Berkeley
UCLA
Swarthmore
Oberlin
USC
UCSB
Howard
UCI

5 on the UC App, 4 on the common app, 5 individual apps
