Outside recommendations?

I have an extra recommendation I would like to include in my college applications (from volunteering). Is it all right if I include it? If so, some colleges doesn't have a form for outsider recommendations, if that's the case how should I include it in? Also is it best if I get 1 teacher rec or 2? Because some colleges only have 1 teacher rec form included in their application.

Best to check out what each school you are applying to requires. Some require 1 teacher rec, some 2, some none.

As for a rec from a non-teacher, do not use it in place of a teacher rec (schools usually won't like that).

Lastly, there is usually no form for a non-teacher/non counselor rec. Instead, just have the recommender compose a letter. The best way to do it so that it has the most legitimacy is to have the recommender write it, seal it in an envelope, then send it to your HS guidance counselor. Then have your school send it along with your transcript.

^ does it have to be that way or could they just send it directly to the colleges?

They can send it directly to the college. Make sure they put identifying information about you (i.e. Full name, birthdate) just so the adcoms can match it up with the rest of your file.

CDN_dancer is right, the only problem is the possibility of it not getting matched up with your other materials, which is why it was suggested that the recommender put in lots of personal identification info on you.

That being the case, I've discovered that the way I suggested (having it sent to your GC and then having the GC put it together with your transcripts) is sometimes a better guarantee that it gets where you want it to go and also that it might be looked at with less of a wary eye that it might have been something you typed up yourself with stolen stationary (not that ANYONE would ever do such a thing ...)

^ Yeah but I dunno if I have enough time to get the outside recommendation to send it to my GC to send it to the college. Also when I give my GC and teachers the rec forms, do they mail it together? And do I have to give them the rest of my application or do I mail my own separately (or do it online separately)

Ask your GC -- every HS does it differently. That being said, traditionally you send in your own apps. You give your rec forms to your teachers. In our HS, the teachers then give those completed recs to guidance and guidance sends those recs as well as their own in together, but in other schools, the teacher might send it in themselves; some even give it back to you -- sealed in an envelope -- and have you send it in.

Don't reinvent the wheel. Talk to your GC and ask how they want it done. If they don't care, then do it the way that is easiest for you, bearing in mind that you don't want to simply "trust" that other people (your teachers, etc ...) care about your future as much as you do. In the end, it's your life, not theirs.
