Outside Scholarships: NFAA

Has anyone applied for the NFAA scholarship? December 1 is the day we are suppose to find out who made it. It was a lot of work, but it seems exciting. I suppose the chances of being selected are very slim, but "You never know". Are there any other art scholarhips out there?

I haven't posted for awhile since my D graduated last May and after acceptance to some top MT schools decided to sit out a year and continue to work professionally in theatre. My D auditioned last year and received an Honorable Mention (a score of 9) and it seems like the letters went out the week of Thanksgiving but the official results weren't released until December 1. My D was able to audition again this year since she will still be 18 as of December 1. She was really excited to receive a call last weekend extending an invitation to attend Arts Week in Miami this year. According to the packet she received this week, there were over 7800 submissions and only 144 were invited to Arts Week (and that's across all of the disciplines). Best of luck to you and those that still might be waiting to hear. It doesn't seem like there were as many CCers that auditioned this year for NFAA but it is a great opportunity.

Can anyone else that may have won any level of prize from last year tell us when they found out. Should we have heard by now too? I am just wondering since Alismom's D has already heard.

Thanks.

I thought I would post this for those who may not have read it on the NFAA website or if would like to try for next year. So if you don't get an award it shouldn't be discouraging. You could still be considered above average in your discipline.

From the website...

The youngARTS scores are based on the careful evaluation of all materials by panels in each artistic discipline. The youngARTS evaluation process consists of a holistic approach rather than a discrete scoring of various aspects of ability in a given art form. Scoring is a subjective evaluation by a group of established artists in a given year. It is intended as a grade for this particular program and not as a definitive evaluation of your artistic ability and potential.

Each participant is scored between 1 and 10. Ten represents finalists invited to Miami, nine represents Honorable Mention award recipients and eight represents Merit award recipients. The remaining participants are scored from 1 to 7. A score of four is the median score representing the panelists' expectations for the average ability of a 17 or 18 year old artist who is competing on a national level in a particular art form. It is possible, therefore, to have been regarded above or well above average by the panelists without having received an award.

youngARTS Finalists are evaluated against a standard of excellence within their chosen discipline, and do not compete against their fellow honorees.

Another question ... Do they tell you your scores?? My D would still be able to do it again next year but it would be nice to see how she was scored.

It appears, based on a discussion on the Music Forum, that calls were already made to those invited to Arts Week. Others will find out if they placed on other award levels on Dec 1st or so. Last year the web site did not have information until around the 6th. They do tell you your score after that. DD got a letter but it did not say why they scored her the way they did so I'm not sure it is much help for the next year.

My D received a call this past weekend as well, with the news that she is a finalist and invited to the workshop week in Miami. She has spoken with some friends of hers who were not chosen as finalists, and they were able to access their scores on the NFAA website. I have not been able to figure out where on the website those scores could be found. I'll try to find out.

Thanks. That would be great. I looked around on the site and didn't see anything like that.

After looking at the website again, I see where the students can log in using their own personal user name and password. Perhaps this is where D's friends have gotten their information. ??

Tried that and all it says is that the registration is closed and Good Luck!

I was not able to look at scores. I hope they post them soon.

TTx3, congrats to your daughter! Who knows, maybe they'll be room mates in Miami! My D was able to access her score last week but can't now. I went back and looked at the posts from last year and it looks like most of the notifications went out the last week in November. Good luck to those still waiting to hear. Any level of award is quite an accomplishment.

Congrats to your D also, AlisMom! Perhaps they WILL be roommates. At the very least, we know they'll become very well acquainted!
Ditto the good luck wishes to all who are waiting for notification.

I think that the NFAA people realized there was a back door into their site to look at scores (you couldn't get to it from the NFAA page, but you could via a google search) and took it down.

Anyway, I entered last year as well and received a couple of merit awards, and as I remember I heard by letter right around the first of December. So wait it out...everyone should hear soon :)

Good luck to those who are waiting and congrats to those who have heard! It's a great program. Honorable mentions and Merit awards are helpful on your college resumes.

Big congrats, Alismom, and ttx3, that is excellent. Let us know how it goes....

Congratulations to Alismom's D and ttx3's D! Very exciting news and huge accomplishments! Go CCers!

Agree with srw that NFAA is a great program and Honorable Mention or Merit Awards are also fine achievements that are recognized by colleges.

Thanks soozie. D has been blessed to have many wonderful instructors in her life who have guided her this far. A big shout out to all teachers, academic and artistic, who are helping our kids on their paths to a fulfilling life, rich in the arts! Thank you all!

Thanks to all, and ditto TTx3's shout out!!

I'm sorry to be bumping an old thread, but I just had a quick question for past/current youngARTs entrants.

How long did you wait before you received an email confirming that NFAA received your submission packet? I sent mine in almost a week ago and haven't heard back. The website says it can take up to 3 weeks to process, but the submission deadline is November 3rd and I was wondering how long I should wait before I call to check if I need to overnight another packet.

Send them an email and ask. My son entered in 2 categories last year, and his dad made prepared jewel cases with slipcovers with his arts ID on front, and I actually MAILED one of them w/o the DVD! (I had been checking them in the DVD player to make sure they would play). NFAA sent me an email letting me know, and I overnighted another copy just in the nick of time (a couple of days before deadline)...and he still got a merit award. So you certainly still have time to get it processed.
