outside scholarships question

Hi all you CCers, I have a question for you guys.

If i get an outisde scholarship, how will this factor in with my financial aid package from the school?

say for example, using hypothetical numbers:

Grants and Scholarships 17,000
Federal and State Grants 9,350
Loans 4,625
Employment 1,500
Total Financial Aid Reward 32,475
EFC: 5,000

so where does this outside package come in? will it take away some of my loans or work study or even efc?? or will it be counted as a part of the grants and scholarships? what i want to know is if i'm recieving an outside scholarship of 2,000 dollars, will the school now give me 15,000 instead of 17,000 because they've bundled the outside scholarship with theirs?

any input? thanks!!

Most colleges apply outside awards to your self help (loans and work study) but you need to contact the college and ask...

Most colleges do apply outside scholarships to loans and work study first. Then if you bring in more than the self-help amount, your grants will also be reduced. Some colleges are a little more complex. One told us that the first $2000 (I believe) will be deducted from self-help, and that any amounts after that will come half from self-help and half from grants.

I would check with the individual college to find out their policy.

it really depends on the school, some work it so that if you have outside scholarship money, the school just offers you less money, and you owe the same amount... check with financial aid offices of the places you are applying/have been admitted!
