I was recently admitted ED to Scripps, and am SUPER excited, but the financial aid package offered was a bit disappointing. I was wondering if anyone knew whether Scripps added outside scholarships to what they are already giving you, or if outside scholarships can be used to help pay for what the college expects your family to be able to contribute.

Also, I am visiting this coming weekend, and my Dad plans to talk with someone from the financial aid office to try and negotiate with them. Are they often open to negotiation?

Thanks!

They are sometimes open for negotiation if there are factors not reflected in the FAFSA. I believe Scripps will use outside scholarships to replace workstudy (and sometimes loans) but they won’t necessarily take away from any grants that you’ve already been given.

Thanks for the reply!

In my financial aid offer, they didn’t mention anything about loans or work-study, they only listed the one grant. Do you get work-study once you’re a student?

If they were going to offer workstudy, they probably would have listed it with the offer you’ve already gotten (unless you’re expecting something more detailed later on). But, there are plenty of non-workstudy positions available on campus if you’d still like to have a job and be making money while you’re here. I’ve had a student job all 4 years and for only one of those years did I have workstudy. (I actually have one workstudy and one non-workstudy job this semester).

Good luck finding outside scholarships. I know it can be a pain (especially that FastWeb website). I wound up with a Byrd scholarship (which has since been defunded by congress, I think) and a onetime scholarship from JiffyLube Oil, so just really put yourself out there and try for a lot of things.

Okay, thanks so much for the information! I will definitely do that.

Also, I am visiting late next week. I’m going to a class, have an overnight, tour, and info session scheduled. But is there anything else that you would recommend I do before I leave?

That should cover all your bases! I hope you get good weather. :)
