The obvious answer to my question is "contact the school directly", but I'm looking to see if there is a "usual" answer.

For schools that give a FA offer that does not include loans or work study (and don't stack), when you receive an outside scholarship, are they typically going to take 100% of your scholarship to replace school funds or will they only take a percentage of it, allowing you to use the additional funds for additional expenses?

Thanks.

“Typically” they replace dollar for dollar loans, WS, and grants in that order. YMMV.

That’s what I was afraid of. Of course when the time comes to decide on a school and notify them of outside scholarships, we will find out how that specific school handles the monies.

Thanks.

If you are talking about the (very) few schools that meet 100% of need with no loans here is my experience:
Typically these schools have a student’s contribution (it may not be indicated separately and just lumped in with EFC on financial award). The student’s contribution usually has 2 components: summer work and work during the school year. In my D1’s case with this type of school they awarded 1 scholarship towards the summer contribution (it was a four year $2k award and is renewed every year) and they applied the other award to the work during the school year. The 2nd scholarship exceeded the work during the school year $ amount and so the first year I asked for a review of the COA to include a bit more for travel (we are across the country and the allocation for travel was a bit low) and also asked to up the COA to include the purchase of a new computer (we really needed this). They were very accommodating and the remaining scholarship monies were subtracted from the grant. It was a win win. In later years she brought in some more o/s scholarships and they awarded according to the student work during year $$ and then the school got the rest. I was more than happy with this arrangement - why not give back when they have given so much!

Which schools won’t include work-study or a “student contribution”???

I know that some schools don’t include loans, but don’t they include W-S and a “student contribution” (often a summer work contribution of about $2500)???

I don’t know of any school that just gives you the whole COA in a big grant. Which school does that?
