It says you need to report outside scholarships so they can "reevaluate" your award letter. What is the meaning of this? Usually schools will subtract from your loans, but in Princeton's case, since there are no loans, do they subtract directly from your financial aid?

I'm worried because I might* get full tuition/board/room but don't want my scholarship to go to waste (I wanted to buy a laptop)

Call Financial Aid. We stopped in there at Preview and I asked about outside scholarship money. I was told that if my son gets anything that is sent to Princeton directly, then he could use it to purchase a computer. Give them a call, they were very helpful when we were there. I guess when the time comes we have to give them a call too. Hopefully he will be getting something!

According to the FA FAQ they subtract from your financial aid package in the following order:

Reduce Campus Job Requirement

Reduce Summer Savings Requirement

Apply anything left toward a one-time computer purchase. (up to $3000, I think)

Reduce Princeton Grant Funds

“Outside scholarships from private sources are used to reduce the campus job and summer savings portions of the aid package. Once the earnings amounts are fully replaced, additional outside scholarship funds can be used toward the purchase of a personal computer. Princeton grant funds are reduced only after these other options have been exhausted. Learn more about how outside scholarships impact the financial aid award in the Undergraduate Financial Aid Information and Application Instructions.”

Sorry, we are from NJ the the aid that my son is getting doesn’t require campus job or summer savings so his would go right to his computer purchase. So I would imagine that you really need to look at your aid package. This is only my second post so please excuse any errors!! Thanks.

^ ProudNJMom, I think that you are absolutely correct. It depends on your FA package. The best that I can tell they reduce aid in the order shown above.

The problem is I don’t want to buy THEiR laptop cause it’s crazy expensive. I wish I can just get cash to buy my laptop elsewhere. Besides they only offer 4 different kinds to laptops, macs and dells.,

I have not seen anything that says you have to buy the laptop through SCI in order to use the outside scholarships. I would contact the FA office to see how it works if you buy the laptop externally. Maybe you just submit a receipt or maybe you just tell them that you want to buy a laptop and a flat $3000 is allowed. I agree that the models available through SCI are limited and will probably buy externally.

My S has outside scholarships that are just a little over the Campus Job (Work-Study) amount, so he will no longer have campus job requirement and his Summer Savings will be reduced a little.

Does this mean he can’t work on campus as a work-study any more? He still wants to do some campus job, will he have to find on his own?

These outside scholarships are one time only awards, so will he be able to get back into Work-Study next year?

the vast majority of on-campus jobs are not work-study dependent---- anyone can be hired. So he shouldn’t have trouble getting a job either way.

I believe that work-study kids get higher priority when it comes to hiring for some jobs. The pay is the same and for many jobs (cafeteria work comes to mind) you will have work-study kids and non work-study kids working side by side.
