Outstanding High School Scholars Program 2012

I wanted to know how legitimate the whole thing is. I'm a junior and I received a letter inviting me to it. I've sent my ACT scores to them, but I only scored a 29 which isn't exactly spectacular for UF. Did any of you receive a letter or have went to this event previously? Was it worth it? I live in North Florida, (closer to Alabama than Central Florida). Any comments would help, thanks.

I personally did not receive it, but from the looks of:

I would assume that it is in fact legitimate.

Thank you, does anyone know the cost to attend?

Hey, I got one too and I live in South Florida…I pretty sure it’s free. It says that they’re going to provide meals and lodging so I imagine the only thing that you’re responsible for is transportation there.

Thanks! Are you Latino or African American?

I’m wondering if it’s a minority outreach type thing.

I did it back in 2007 (!) a year before I entered UF. I brought my mom because she was invited too and I knew she would like it because other spanish speaking parents would be there. Apparently I was nominated by my high school counselor, along with two other hispanic students from my school. There is another similar session for black students and one for invited top FL high school seniors (regardless of color) that is based on PSAT performance (I think).

It was a pretty good weekend. It is a two day program similar in set up and feel to preview ( im fact, its hard for me to dissociate the two memories in my head although preview was a year later ). It is mostly in the reitz union, although tours are available (i didnt go on one because it was raining). Obviously its a huge UF PR fest with glittering things to say about the university. Outside of the usual, you get tons of real insider info about the application process and how to make your app really stand out. You can talk one on one with the admissions people who read apps and significant time was appropriatley devoted to the application, selection, and enrollment processes.

Despite all the usual pimping out UF does for itself, this is still a recruitment event, make no mistake about it. It is definetly about you becoming well informed and they will absolutely spill any detail they need to spill to make sure your application is as competitive as possible. Being an attendee is significant because you can put it on your application and they told us it gives you a preference but is by no means a guarantee for admission.

I would absolutely go. I would have to say it was one of the better UF hosted events I attended.

Congrats all.

Prior to this year, it used to be segmented for groups. It is not displayed as such any longer on UF’s site. It appears one is selected by their PSAT scores taken in Junior year according to the below.
