Daughter is going for a second visit to a DII school in a few weeks. Assuming I do not attend should she be prepared to verbally commit if they make an offer at that time?? Is it common to get an offer at the conclusion of the OV?? This is by far her first choice and she would like to lock it up if possible.

Firsttimer, if your daughter gets an offer on her OV, I would strongly advise your daughter to ask for a day or two before accepting, even if it is her first choice. She can tell the coach she’d just like to have the opportunity to bring her parents into the discussion. If the coach pressures her, she (and you) may want to think about whether this is a place/coach you want her to be. And what if her offer is a roster spot only (no money) v a scholarship? What if her offer is contingent on improved times? Would any of this affect whether it is her first choice?

My D had 4 offers (although this was before the OVs), and every coach TOLD her to take her time in making a decision. I would be wary of a program who didn’t allow an athlete to discuss financial matters with her parents.

I agree, have her bring the offer home so you can review it with her. There are so many variables in the offer and while most 17 year olds think they know everything, they just don’t. If she gets a 1/2 tuition scholarship, for example, do you have the funds to come up with the other$$$ of the cost to attend? Did the offer come over with automatic merit aid so you know the final cost? What if the other schools she is considering come in at 1/2 the cost of this school? Will she still go to that school?

You bring up a good point Steve - I have heard of a few athletes who confused a 1/2 tuition offer with a 50% COA offer. BIG difference! Time is the best way to sort out the details.

…and of course, a % of COA is usually better than a flat $ amount, since COA tends to increase every year. Too many details to evaluate before you jump (unless it’s just a flat-out, full COA offer).

Varska; and we were told that when you get a % of COA, that applies to any and all fees and programs - most importantly summer sessions and travel abroad. BIG difference over a flat $ amount.
