over 25,000 applicants for class of 2014

Brown added the common app this year. I foresee either stagnation or even decline in the next couple of years, as less-competitive applicants shy away from a newly-selective Brown. It would be almost impossible to sustain that type of growth for another year.

Ahhh I didn’t know Brown added the common app this year. Even before they introduced the common app though, didn’t they have like 3-4 successive years of 15%+ growth?

No - the big jump came last year, from 20,600 to 25,000 or so. The year before that was 19,400. Brown has very much been the model of stagnation or explosive growth. But after this year, I expect things to quiet down significantly.

Gotya - I guess I just hear about them more because they have those well-publicized years of that “explosive” growth. If colleges have growth of 10% or so, its just not as newsworthy as those spurts of 20-25% growth.

Admissions is a strange game.

does penn have any stats out concerning the ed class of 2014?

^ Just the number of ED apps (3,842):

The ED acceptance stats should come out within the next couple of weeks. Last year, they were released around January 22nd:

What happens if more students choose to matriculate at Penn than expected? Hypothetically, if 2600 students decide to accept Penn’s offer, then what would Penn do?

Put them in the University City Hilton.

But given the recent gunshots at the Bridge I don’t think that’s going to happen…

Yea did you guys see the news on this?

Here’s the philly article:

[Battle at the Bridge | Philadelphia Daily News | 01/16/2010](http://www.philly.com/philly/news/homepage/20100116_Battle_at_the_Bridge.html)

That’s really scary - the bridge is basically right on Penn’s campus, and on any given friday night, there are hundreds of students going to watch movies at that movie theater. It’s just a scary episode. One Drexel student was hurt I believe.

Yeah a Drexel student was shot as was an off-duty cop.

I was extremely disappointed that Penn did not alert their students in anyway, even with the new PennAlert system or whatever they call it. Sure, the bridge isn’t exactly “on campus,” but it’s as close as can be and there are tons of people that live in that area (right next to the Sig Ep house).

My friends and I followed the helicopters around from our rooms in Harrison. There were a handful of them up there, including a police one that used a searchlight (to no avail).

That’s three shooting incidents on 40th street since mid-summer (by McDonalds in the summer, the Copa bouncer that got shot a month ago, and now the Bridge).

Even if Penn didn’t believe any students were under any threat, I still feel that they should have sent a mass email or something.

“Brown added the common app this year.”

Brown actually added the common app last year for the Class of 2013.

Also, I read on CC that schools show a major jump in applicants the 2nd year on the CommonApp. U. of Chicago is a prominent example of this.

I especially like this quote from the second story:

:p

Hahaha wow I went for the mumbai reception so thx for the links. For some random reason they have mentioned and highlighted my dads name as a special guest or something in the second link!!

India seems to like Penn.

i think over th years india has grown in terms of the number of candidates that it sends over to various universities in the us and other countries. Also, it is a known fact that they candidates then usually market the university themselves once back home. Also, since India has a relatively youth oriented population whose education rates are increasing with every passing day, india can be a clever locale from where to attain more students and even money. Penn is cleverly utilising all this. Also, there has been a recent announcement in Mumbai that Penn, and especially Wharton, is opening up a university in th outskirts of Mumbai itself in collaboration with the Ambanis. This just reflects Penn’s belief that India is the next education hub.

Well as a FREE country it will certainly make a better educational hub than China… Jai Ho!

From what I can tell, India is in love with Wharton more so than anything else. Any Penn love we get is incidental :P

India’s current state of development means it is very much on a preprofessional bent, but hopefully that will mellow out in the decades to come.

yes ilovebagels, i completely agree abt the ‘preprofessional’ bent statement. However, i just spoke to a famous mumbai based guidance/college counselor and he was amazed by the high number of indian applicants this year for penn cas. he said that he is currently assisting about 150 indian penn applicants and approx 80 of them are cas applicants which is very high compared to last years % (of students of his who chose penn cas while applying to penn) of abt 30%!

also, i spoke to the mumbai head of the interview committee at the penn dinner and he said that this year he received the names of 48 people from just mumbai for the ed round! thats ALOT considering that the number hadnt crossed 25 for ED till last year for mumbai.

However, he also stated that most of the ed-ers were wharton or dual degree applicants which might reflect the preprofessional part while also showing how the indian mentality is centered around wharton being the ‘dream college’. Sadly, however, only 4 of these 48 students got admission which shows the abysmal admit rate of ed for mumbai!

wait, how do i quote someone elses earlier post in my reply? im confused.

thanks
