I can't believe only 150 out of 4200 were accepted... Is it really that competitive to get into this major?

wow! 150 is so little! do you know if they sent messsage like this to other majors like engineering?

No idea about other majors. I am not going to attend UCI, but this email shocked me a little.

Well, last year they had ~3700 freshman applicants for Business Administration… they admitted 538 and enrolled 84. Business and nursing were the most selective majors last year (14.6% and 10.6%, respectively). What does surprise me is how low the yield for business was (15.6%)… Nursing had a yield of over 40%. Yeah, it was the first year for the business major, but it was only the second year for nursing.

wow even 538/~3700 is 14.54%

how do they cut admit size so much that admission rate is 3.57%? Is business really that competitive to get into?

The admission rate was 14.6% (538/3696). Last year, only 84 of the 538 applicants they admitted chose to enroll (resulting in that 15.6% yield). As I said, I’m not sure why the yield was so low… maybe people were hesitant to come to a new program in its first year. These were no doubt top applicants who were also accepted at other good B schools.

I have no idea how many applicants were accepted this year, but they clearly hope to end up with 150 enrolling. Looks like they’re offering some strong supporting services to attract those that they’ve accepted.

Wow this is making me even more anxious because I’m on the waitlist and my major is Business Administration…

i’ve been accepted, and so far, i havent liked the stuff i heard about the program. basically, its new, unproven, and unpredictable. im sure at least some of the other people that have been accepted think this, so if you’re on the waitlist, dont lose hope! :)

right now, im leaning towards USC marshall. hopefully they’ll give me good financial aid

150 isnt the admit rate… its the number of spots they have open. if you account for yield, they probably accepted around 1000 students. I got this email too, and I got into some good schools, but looking at the numbers made me stop and think for a second. there’s a lot of potential for the merage school and I think anyone who’s gotten accepted should consider it

Okay I see. But even ~1000, that is still much lower than the general UCI admission rate for freshmen. Is that an indicator of the strength of the program?

yeah UCI was not on my list at all either but it did make me stop and think. I am deciding b/w Cal - pre-biz, UCLA-bizecon, and USC marshall at the moment. I haven’t heard from most of my privates yet

You could say that… Maybe the limited spots were to give off this impression, who knows? The first class hasn’t graduated yet. I mean just because college A admits less than college B doesn’t entirely indicate college A is stronger than college B… It could be an indication of general popularity.

that sucks

that acceptance rate is enough for someone to maybe apply as another major
