Overall Experience at BU?

I’m considering transferring to BU next semester and was wondering if current students could list their experiences there. Thanks

hahaha too many experiences to list! there's lots of other threads on this, but im a senior now at BU and am staying here for another 4 yrs and am hoping to settle in boston cuz ive loved it so much!

I'm looking forward to transferring out. I guess I'll be one of the 9% who don't return for sophomore year

I know many transfer students here and it seems like BU was really what they were looking for in a college. There may be freshmen who transfer out, but the students who transfer in love it. BU is a unique school, so if you're leaving your old school to come here, chances are you'll enjoy the difference.

Like kev, I was one of the 9% who didn't/won't return for sophomore year.

^Can I ask why? Was it just a personal thing? Or did you really just not like the school?

diontechristmas - i think i pm'ed you about this, right?

but anyway, i don't like the atmosphere/environment. academics are good, however
now i'm thinking about going to my local cc and transferring to a uc school. not sure yet

Yeah, you did, kev.

sak, it was a multitude of reasons. If you want the list:

-I wasn't sure what I wanted to do, so I decided to apply directly to CGS thinking it was a good option because you take all prereqs, and it would be a nice way to transition into college life. Frankly, the program sucks, it's a waste of $50,000 a year, there's no transition whatsoever, and the courses, contrary to popular belief were not easy. The science class they just eliminated could pass for upper level at most schools, and I'm an average (B/B+) science student. The large lectures in addition to the classes were pointless.
-I wasnt happy socially. I know it's freshman year and all, but I found that pretty much everyone I knew was interested in solely getting drunk. Though, I did meet some cool people right before I left, but I didn't git in socially.
-Boston wasn't as great as hyped. Everything closes early. Campus layout at BU is horrendous. Takes too long to walk from one end of campus to the other, and I shouldn't have to take the T everywhere.
-Pretentiousness of student body, especially the girls. At $50,000 a year, it's no surprise, but some of the crap is just laughable. Kids driving around in $100,000 cars, cliqueness, etc. I'm not remotely close to poor, but I felt out of place.
-I didnt like not having a football team, but even outside of that, having a basketball team with no support doesnt help. Dont get me wrong, I love my Terriers hockey and will continue to support them, but football=college
-Bottom line overall was that I felt I was wasting my parents' money, and that the school just wasn't worth $200,000. If you get a significant scholarship, then by all means, it's a solid school, but even if you can afford it and receive no $$, you can probably do better.

KJ4KS - i transferred to BU in fall 2007 and it was the best decision i ever made.

diontechristmas list is their own personal opinion. I don't like CGS either but as a transfer student, you wouldn't have the option of being in CGS so there's nothing to worry about there.
I transferred here knowing absolutely no one and now i have a great group of friends. its just a matter of if you'll put yourself out there and talk to people in your classes or join some groups, because BU is such a large urban campus that you have to put in the effort, you're not just going to magically make friends when you transfer here. i also met a lot of people during transfer orientation, and you get along erallywell bc everyone is in the same boat as you are.
Boston is a GREAT city! yes bars close at 2 but its still amazing. there's everything that i want in this city and more. it does take a little while to walk form one end of the campus to the other i guess but honestly how often do you have to do that? and there's the BU bus, t and mbta busses too.
You can't classify BU into only having a pretentious student body. BU is an expensive school and you do get a lot of wealthy people because of that but its definitely not the entire student body. i've met some of hte nicest girls here that i've ever met in my life.
The hockey team is GREAT and going to games is awesome.

PM me if you want to talk about it more or have any more questions...

diontechristmas, it suks that your experience turned out that way. Good luck wherever you are, I hope things get better.

They are better, thanks :)

i am currently a bu student now, but am transferring out next year. i have read that bu has a high retention rate but have heard of a lot more people transferring out than i would have expected. academics are good but imo, nothing special. there really is no campus. its basically one long street and everything on that street closes early. it really lacks that traditional campus feel. most people love boston, i just have found that it's not really the city for me at all.

mog, I felt exactly the same as you. I knew a bunch of people who transferred out like I did.

fyi, though i know people transfer out because they don't like it, most of the people who transferred out of bu this year transferred out because they couldn't afford it with the economic recession, not because they didn't like it

Well I was talking about last year.

i agree that some people are transferring for financial reasons. but, money has nothing to do with the reason i am transferring out

Yeah, you did, kev.

I feel 100% the same way. I am a freshman in SMG and am trying to transfer out for next year. Now I am trying to get a better business program that is closer to home, but these reasons contributed to me applying. This school is not worth 50k a year, and I am getting to aid to help this at all. Not having a football team sucks. Hockey is fun but cannot compare to a true college game. Freshman year you really have to meet people or you will be miserable. True, many find going out and getting drunk works, but overall BU does seem to have a little bit of a weird social scene. Plus, an entire campus on one long street is no fun.

Can anyone tell me more about the greek scene? Do they have housing or lodges? What people generally join them?

there are frats and sororities. frat houses are in allston, a suburb, that many people will use to party on the weekends. you can live in their houses but most people don't want to because they get utterly disgusting from the parties thrown there. the people that generally join are the people that want to join.

And a good fact to know is that only 4% of BU students take part in greek life. So out of 30000 its a good size if you want to get into it. But by no means is it like the ONLY way to make friends.

And the houses in allston aren't technically 'official' frat houses. they just tend to be guys in the same frats living together. actual frat or sorority houses would be endorsed by the school. just a technicality
