I have a Q

What counts more for admission to the UC's (such as UCLA or Cal, in particular?)
For instance, with my gpa, I have a 3.54 something but my major prereq's are a 4.0 (for spanish).
Would this increase my chances because I have a competitive major gpa,or is admission just based on general gpa?

Thanks :D
(sorry I know I ask a lot of questions but I'm a little clueless as I'm new to the UC transfer thing)

Also, do you think by having taken a semester off and gone to Taiwan for 3 weeks to do a bit of language immersion (and visit my best friend!), that would distinguish me from other applicants at all? (Taking all the money i’d earned the whole year before). I only saw her 3 days of the time I was there, even though I stayed with her, she was off at school and I went off on my own.
I also went with my fam to mexico last summer, and I tried as much as possible to venture off on my own and immerse myself in spanish for a week. Hope this’ll help with my lower gpa
ok shutting up now haha

Dude, you need to relax. As a Spanish major, you are almost guaranteed an acceptance. At UCLA, 66% of the applicants got accepted, and the average GPA was a minuscule 3.37. At Berkeley, 40% of the applicants to Art & Humanities majors were accepted. You should be a shoe in.

As for your second question, do you really need to ask? Obviously if you can articulate those experiences in a way which shows the admissions officers your interest in Spanish, then they will help your application. It seems like a perfect story to include in essay #1.

Good Luck To You

thanks!
Wait, you think i’m a shoe in at berkeley!?! lol
i’d die if i got in there, like i’ think id actuall cry. i always imagined applying to these schools, that’s one thing, but to actually GET IN is a totally diff story!

I’d say you’re probably in at UCLA and competitive at UCB. You’re a shoe-in for at least one or the other.

**** yes this thread inspires me!!!

I hope you guys realize it gets more competitive each year. You aren’t really a shoo-in anywhere, especially at UCLA if you don’t have TAP done. Cal looks at the school you are applying to so your major doesn’t really matter, and a 3.4 isn’t as strong as some of these guys are portraying it to be. You have a shot like anyone else, but I wouldn’t put all my eggs in one basket (or 2 in this case).

Yeah I was gonna say I don’t know about a shoe-in, but I’m just going to try and write th ebest essay that I can (Because god knows it’s impossible to find samples on the internet!!)
oh well
either way, we shall see.
thanks for your responses!
Anybody else have any input before I write the essay lol
