My intended major is a competitive one. Will this impact whether or not I will be admitted to my schools? Or do schools consider you as an overall applicant, and admit you regardless of your intended major?

This brings me to another question: Do some schools admit you directly into certain majors?

Applying for a competitive major can hurt you slightly, though the impact of one’s intended major is negligible.

If that major is within a separate school within the university, yes. Engineering is one example.

Depends on the school and the major. Some universities admit by colleges (e.g. you are admitted to the College of Arts and Sciences) and some admit you to the university with an intended major. Certain universities have “impacted” majors, meaning they are full and it’s difficult for students to get classes. The question you pose is a good one for an admissions officer at the place(s) in which you’re interested. That way you can get a specific response.
