Overarching IGETC Question

Hello everyone!

I was recently admitted to UC Berkeley’s College of Letters and Science for Fall 2017. I am transferring from a California Community College.
I was recently informed that my IGETC certification could not be filed as completed because I do not satisfy the Mathematics (Area 2) requirement.

HOWEVER, on my community college’s IGETC requirements PDF page, it does list PSYC 7 (stats for behavioral science) as a mathematics fulfillment… which I took/passed.

On Assist.org, it seems as though that class does not transfer to UC Berkeley.
Somebody PLEASE HELP and suggest what I should do. I know it’s a four day weekend so the offices are closed but I am extremely overwhelmed by this.

I understand that it is my negligence for not following up on Assist.org but I have also heard that Assist is not always accurate.
Please please please let me know and thank you so much for your time!

What CCC is this?

They are really uptight about that math. It seems to me if you didn’t have it, the UC would email you and ask about it. They emailed me when I inadvertently left out the second English in my application. That math and the two English are the bare minimum requirements needed to apply. They always verify those three. That makes me think it DOES fulfill the math req. or you wouldn’t have been admitted.

Contact the UC.

@Ohm888 , thank you for responding. I’ve done half my general ed at Foothill College, and the other half at De Anza College. I recently sent my official transcripts to Berkeley and they haven’t gotten back. On my UC application, PSYC 7 does fulfill the requirement but on Berkeleys assist, it does not. While UCLA and other UC’s DO accept it.

This one says all UC campuses. http://web2.assist.org/web-assist/report.do?agreement=tca&reportPath=REPORT_2&reportScript=Rep2.pl&event=28&ia=FOOTHILL&ay=16-17&arc=N&dora=PSYC

@Happy2Help WOW! That is what I’ve been looking for this whole time. I wonder why Berkeley specifically does not list it… hm. I will still confirm with both schools that this is applicable. Thank you SO much!

I just noticed that on Assist it notes that the PSYC courses may not transfer over, depending on how the UC “reviews the scope of them.”

I agree with Ohm, you would not have been admitted if they didn’t count it as UC-M.

Also it’s Foothill that certfies your IGETC so Berkeley should accept.

You may be able to petition for course substitution so you should keep your syllabus.

Or a last option is to take a math during the summer.

UC’s require all coursework to be finished by the end of Spring 2017, otherwise I would take it in the summer.

I had a De Anza advisor (De Anza & Foothill are sister schools) file my IGETC cert, and she is the one who emailed me regarding this issue. Maybe I should take this to Foothill and talk to them.

I will look further into course substitutions so thank you for that info.

This is stressing me out more than the actual admission decision so I appreciate everyone’s help!

@Happy2Help

Not true for all UCs. My daughter took a course during the summer prior to Fall, for UCLA. Many transfers to UCs are short of coursework.

Did you take Psyc 7 at Foothill or De Anza?

My daughter also had a problem that a CCC she attended, didn’t submit to Assist correctly, although the sister school showed the class as UC transferable. She had to have the advisor contact the UC and also fix on Assist.

It looks like De Anza doesn’t show the class on Assist.

@Happy2Help , UC Berkeley requires all official transcripts to be turned in by July 1st, leaving no options to finish a summer course in that time span.

I took PSYC 7 at Foothill during Fall 2014 and passed with an A. On Foothills IGETC requirements catalog, PSYC 7 is listed under the Mathematics area, but does not show up on Assist.org as being transferable to Berkeley.

I really hope that Assist.org has a glitch in this case. My De Anza advisor may see on Assist that it does not transfer over to Berkeley and send a partial IGETC (which Berkeley does not accept).

You may have to try sending IGETC from Foothill since it is listed in their IGETC matrix as acceptable.

I think so too. I’m waiting to hear back from my De Anza advisor on Tues, and if I have anymore trouble, I will contact Foothill.

Thank you for your time @Happy2Help

Yes, it looks like Foothill’s Psyc 7 is the same as De Anza’s Psyc 15 and De Anza’s IGETC matrix accepts Psyc 15. What does your unofficial transcript say for that class? Some CCs put a UC notation for each class.

Good luck, I think you are OK.

Psych 7 at Foothill fulfills math area 2A on assist. You’re fine. Trust me, you wouldn’t have gotten in otherwise. Plus, it shows under the IGETC assist area. You don’t have to analyze anything else.

Your advisor seems confused. They sign off on the Foothill course and you send Berkeley the Foothill transcript. (Either CCC can certify.)

FYI, I’m not sure where you’re getting that psych 7 doesn’t transfer to Berkeley. If it fulfills area 2A it transfers to all the UCs. Don’t do anymore searches. You’re getting worked up. You have full IGETC.

The only notation I see is on my unofficial transcript for that quarter I took PSYC 7 which notes “Academic standing: nonapplicable/no standing calc.” While all of the other quarters say “Academic standing: good standing” … so whatever that means.
I think I was intimated by the fact that the class wasn’t listed under the Mathematics department on Assist.org. Also, it’s mentions here that it’s a “special studies” class which means that after transferring, the UC reviews the scope of the class to see if it meets requirements.

@Happy2Help

@Ohm888 you’re definitely right. I am overanalyzing everything and need to settle down. I think I should be okay.

It’s reassuring knowing there are some good people out there willing to help others.

My daughter’s CCC unofficial transcript has a column for CSU and UC and shows for each course, what CSU and UC area it satisfies.

Yeah I don’t see anything like that on mine @Happy2Help
