Overcoming being a pushover: how do you be assertive without being arrogant or mean?

Title says all. :'[

Specifically, how do you do it to teachers?

Have your friend teach you how to say “No.”

My roommate is trying to teach me. I’m failing :/

I have the same problem. :(

^^ i know…i find it especially hard when the other person trying to persuade you to do something for him/her asks in a really nice voice or tone.

You need to stop worrying about what the other person will think or feel because of your decision.
Don’t be a jerk to them–but at the moment, you’re currently putting someone else’s wants above yourself and as a result, devaluing your worth.

Whoever you’re worried about upsetting by saying “no,” or standing up for yourself, they’ll get over it.

Yeah I guess I’m being a little too considerate and overly empathetic. Empathy is one of my strongest traits, so that’s probably why I am what I am. sigh

Develop a sense of arrogance. You’re better/smarter/hotter/whatever than other people, they damn well better acquiesce to you.

Well that probably isn’t the most healthy mindset, but it works for me.

HAHAH “damn well better” ■■■■■ . ■■■■■ moment right there .

well, what is it that teachers are asking of you?

I dunno…I tried to gain arrogance once, because if you have arrogance then you will most likely have confidence. I have yet learned how to say no to teachers. I can say no to friends all the time though :] I learned. officials are more difficult though.

I have the same problem. If someone asks me to do something I can’t say no. Ironically enough, I can never do anything for myself and just myself. Blahh

think about how mean you’re being to yourself by forcing yourself to do something you don’t want to do

I can say no to everyone else, except teachers…I’m afraid they’ll give me bad grades haha…

Before, I used to use that strong sense of arrogance and go like I said no dumbass. I’m the ****, back away. After quickly rising the ranks to HS public enemy # 1, I decided to use a cool, assertive ‘no’.

I think it just depends on your personality. In reality if you say ‘no’ to something, someone may always think you’re mean or arrogant. If you want to be more assertive you have to accept that no matter what you do, you can’t please everyone; and that much of the time you’ll be better off doing what is best for you.
If you stop caring what people think, it becomes easy. Again, it’s harder for some people than others.

thoughtful look
“Nah, sorry.”
