Overcoming Challenges

One of the essays I need to write is talking about the challenges I faced growing up and how it has caused me to grow. The problem is I'm having trouble in selecting what to write about.

Immigration - I moved to America when I was 8 years old and had to adapt to a new culture. However, this seems too cliche. Should I write about this?

When I was in 8th grade, one of my closest friends passed away from serious health problems. However, I talked about this already in my other essay for significant experience.

I broke my arm when I was in high school and it sucked because I couldn't participated in sports. But is this even as significant to write an essay about?

I'm leaning more towards immigration, but my brother tells me never to write about it because it is so cliche and cheesy. Is he right or wrong? (Honest opinions please!)

Every immigrants’ story is the same, and every immigrants’ story is different. It is the biggest challenge you have faced in your life. How can you not write about it?

My favorite book on the immigration experience is “The Arrival” by Shaun Tan. My second favorite is “In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson” by Betty Bao Lord. Pop by the public library and take a look at them. You may be inspired.

Wishing you all the best.
