Is it okay to write about this?

I was brainstorming and starting to write my college essays. For the CommonApp I was considering writing about overcoming diabetes and what it means to me. I will NOT be writing this as a pity essay by any means but I think that my life with diabetes has taught me responsibility and given me a perspective that I want to convey. I ultimately want to make it positive and write it explain a profound experience in my life. Also, my current "life goal" is to help other children in my situation through Doctoring or Research.

I need to know from an experienced person if this is okay to write about? Is it considered like a "pity searcher" essay because I want to convey a sense on strength not pity in any means. Basically is an appropriate essay idea?

Don’t you think this theme has been used, abused and raped? I doubt you could pull off an essay like that.

But isn’t this point of the essay to write about something that’s meaningful to us. I feel passionate about this and I think I could write this because of the passion. Isn’t it worth it to write the MEANINGFUL essay. I mean honestly what other essay would be worth it because isn’t the point to have a passion and a story to share?

Sounds like a great essay that reflects your character and shows how you overcame adversity and want to use your experience to help others.

It’s definitely not a pity me cliched type of essay. Go for it!

It is overused if you think about it as an essay about struggles with disease, it isn’t overused if you think of it as an essay about your perspective on life and goals and the road that lead you there. I’ve read a handful of essays and very rarely do they ever allude to the persons perspective on life but this is such a vital part of someones personality. I once wrote about the role that being part of the newspaper staff has played in my life, quite possibly the most overused essay out there. Instead of saying how it has shaped me as a person and taught me team work etc, I took an anecdotal approach and wrote about the time I forgot to click the save button and lost an entire spread of the newspaper minutes before it was supposed to be sent to print and in essence made it about forgetting to click the save button but was able to convey the importance of newspaper by my frantic reaction to the situation.
