Please inform me of my chances of Yale. I know I don't have AMAZING SAT scores, but that can't be everything, can it?

Your SAT scores and GPA sink you right off the bat. Look at the massive Yale SCEA thread on this forum to get an idea of exactly the types of applicants you're competing with.

"Please inform me of my chances of Yale. I know I don't have AMAZING SAT scores, but that can't be everything, can it?"

Actually, it can. Sorry.

Well I don't think SAT scores are everything. They are very important but a well-rounded applicant with decent, though not great, SAT scores would probably get in over a 2400 4.0 no extracurricular study nerd. I think your chances are good. Yale is a crapshoot for everybody and most of the people on these boards know less than you do (as most of us are just nervous applicants ourselves.) Apply and see what happens. You might be surprised.

She'll be $75 in the hole.

Yeah, if she expected to be deferred.

Aww...that's kinda mean. But sometimes the best applicants aren't accepted and lower stats applicants get in. If she has something unique about her or if her essays were great she has a decent shot. Besides if she doesn't apply her chance of getting in is a guaranteed 0% and at least she won't always wonder about what could have happened.

(I do understand your point though evil_asian.)

Ah! I live right around katonah! We can be mutually screwed by our Westchesterness...

Do you have legacy? It seems like everyone around here donated a building or two to the noble cause of light and truth...

Sorry, but the middle 50% SAT score range for accepted Yale applicants is 700-790 for both Math and Reading. That means a full 25% of accepted applicants had SAT section scores above 790 (ie, 800s)...And only 25% of accepted applicants at Yale had SAT section scores below 700. The OP's scores are way below 700, putting her in the bottom 25% range. Unfortunately, to get in with scores in the bottom 25% range you have to be a special case: athlete, minority, rich, etc. The OP isn't any of these things and will therefore be rejected. That's just how it is. Getting rejected from Yale isn't an insult. Big deal...there are tons of other good colleges out there.

woah, kwijiborjt & real live me. I guess maybe there's a reason we westchester residents get screwed over- there are so many of us!

I completely understand what you're saying kwijiborjt, I have no legacy/hooks/whatever, if it makes you feel any better... I guess we're in the same boat

You can't help but try. The only way that there is a 100% chance that you will be rejected is if you don't apply. Frankly I have stats very similar to yours...I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my SAT scores go up come Tuesday, and that I get a lovely message saying that I'll be a YALIE come December 15th!

You are the type of applicant that Yale will reject due to your mean spirited competiveness.

LOL!!! Even if that was so, I would only exhibit that sort of attitude to a "competitive" Yale applicant, which the OP clearly is not. She asked for some honest feedback and I gave her some. There are plenty of fine colleges nationwide that will not only accept her, but will most likely offer her some generous merit aid offers.

Yale is THE most selective college in the country so I see no reason to sugarcoat my responses on chance threads. The fact is, 90% of the people on this board including myself will most likely get rejected outright when December 15th rolls around. The OP has nothing to be ashamed of.

Yes, sugarcoating isn't usually helpful. But I think it's important to maintain a certain level of civility, courtesy, call it what you may.. in posting.

I don't know if it's because the decision-day is looming closer, or if the holidays are stressful, but I think it would be good if everyone tried to be a little more .. friendly?.. and a little less competitive. The board (as a whole) seems to be getting really tense. Our applications are in, and what will come, will come -- why should we start to worry now about all of the other applicants?

I'm sure that no one here wants to cast a bad shadow on his or her character.

^I hope you're having a good Thanksgiving weekend brune!!!:)

Try not to get too caught up in this guys...

evilasiandictator has NO LIFE NO LIFE NO LIFE NO LIFE NO LIFE NO LIFE. dude, 1,000+ posts JESUS CHRIST GET A FREAKING LIFE.

I don't think there is any taste in discouraging someone from applying. If you have the money to apply you should apply if you want, regardless of whatever anyone thinks.

However, it does seem to be true that SAT scores may be the first thing they might drop you for. I don't see what is wrong with your GPA though as someone has pointed out. Other then that, good luck! Maybe you can try retaking the SATs and send in new scores with your transcript?

EVERYONE WHO WANTS TO APPLY SHOULD APPLY- and no one should be sitting here insulting people about the hard work they did throughout high school. evilasiandictator- have you been accepted? are you an adcom? ive seen your posts on other chances threads and you are a very cruel person- why would you want that bad karma on your chest about the whole process? everyone who deserves to get in will get in, and sometimes that has NOTHING to do with gpa or sat's. i dont get why people are so cruel to people about these chances threads, evilasiandictator probably thinks hes the man at home, no friends to hang out with, so he goes on cc.com and insults people that are probably a lot nicer and generally better than him.
