I am auditioning for the summer Music Theatre Conservatory programme run by Broadway by the Bay and Notre Dame de Namur University, and as I am from the UK I am making a DVD audition to send off, on which I need to have 2 songs and a monologue. However, although I know what songs are overdone and not overdone over here, I have no idea about that side of the pond, and was wondering if someone could just let me know about a few songs to help me make my decision as to what to sing. I have a couple of others I am pretty sure aren't done much, but any info on the following would be great.

Everybody's Girl - Steel Pier
Gorgeous - The Apple Tree
Loose Ends - Witches of Eastwick
My Brother Lived in San Francisco - Elegies for Angels, Punks and Raging Queens

Am assuming Not For the Life of Me from Thoroughly Modern Millie and A New Life from Jekyll and Hyde are as horrendously overdone there as they are here?

Millie, yes, Not For The Life is overdone, and A New Life is also commonly done. I do know a number of kids who have sung “My Brother” from Elegies, but I wouldn’t think it would be horribly overdone for auditions. The rest sound great.

Interesting, thank you. Interestingly all those 4 get done a fair bit over here (not on the Les Mis and Cats scale, but they certainly aren’t uncommon), but I did wonder how much difference there was. I did suspect that Loose Ends wouldn’t get done much there, because Witches has never made it to Broadway so I shouldn’t imagine it is as well known over there as here.

Because I am your secret stalker. And every US performing arts website I read, Everybody’s Girl pops up as an audition “idea” very regularly, hence why I mentioned it. By the way good luck with this audition, it sounds fab!

Merci beaucoup. My plan was to record a couple of ballads and a couple of uptempos and then see which sounded best, so as long as something isn’t horrifically overdone I don’t mind using it - I am using a slightly more laid back approach than I do for my drama school auditions over here Major sheet music disaster at the moment though, and my lesson to record the songs is thursday, so am panicking slightly!
