Overenrolled

I was on the waitlist at Lafayette until yesterday when I got a letter in the mail saying that they have thirty more than expected enrollments for the fall. They are keeping a small waitlist for the summer, but I viewed it as pointless and took myself off.

Just curious: what were your stats? Are you an international?

No I am from Connecticut.
My Stats:
3.6 GPA
730 Math 620 Verbal 600 Writing
720 Math I 750 Math II
Very Competitive Private Day School
Head server at a country club

Hook: First high school student to volunteer at a university's television station (4 years).

notsurefor2006,

This piece of information makes perfect sense to me. Before I left for the summer, the word flying around the Admissions Office was that we were going to be underenrolling for the Class of 2010. Everyone was freaking out!

Judging by the number of enrollment deposits we had received by the deadline of Monday, May 1, we expected that we would need to turn to the waitlist in a BIG way...and they must have pulled too many off the list prematurely! I thought we would be receiving the bulk of deposits in the mail the week of May 1, even though the official deadline was May 1 (NOT a postmark date!). I guess I was right!

Hmmm...I gave tours to a good number of prospective students pulled off of the waitlist in my last few weeks of leading tours before the end of the semester. I should have seen this coming!

As you can imagine, it is quite difficult to judge how many students will accept Lafayette's offer of admission, even with the yield statistics from previous admissions cycles. I think it was a good idea for you to pull yourself off the small waitlist. After all, if we really did overenroll, we would not be looking for any additional students. I am sorry to hear about that...was Lafayette one of your "top choices"?

You definitely had the stats to get in, but then again, many qualified applicants were turned down this year because of the quality of applicants in this year's pool.

No matter how much time I spend in Admissions, I seriously doubt if I will EVER fully understand what goes on behind closed doors.

I had pretty much the worst luck regarding colleges ever. I applied to 10 schools, only got into 2 of my safeties (Loyola Maryland and UConn). Got waitlisted at a bunch. I really want to go to BC (where I was waitlisted), after that, I didn't have a cleaer cut #2 but Lafayette was definitely in teh mix along w/ Bucknell (waitlisted there too).

notsurefor2006,

If this can serve as ANY consolation, I really feel for you. Rest assured that you are not the only one in that kind of a situation...you are just one of MANY college applicants who have unfortunately become victims of the college admissions process.

Just keep in the back of your mind the thought of transferring. Transferring is quickly becoming a more popular and feasible option for those who wish to attend a "better" college than the one they start at. If you really want to attend BC, spend a year at one of your "safeties", do well academically, and then think about applying as a transfer student.

I am unsure as to the colleges/universities on your list that accept transfers, but I do know for sure that Lafayette is an option.

Just a thought...

I got in off of BC's waitlist today which im thrilled about and is a nice graduation present.

Congratulations! Have you sent them additional materials, like recent grades, extra essays, etc. or just crossed your fingers and waited?

notsurefor2006: Congratulations!

notsurefor2006,

CONGRATULATIONS!
So does that mean you have decided to attend Boston College?

J

Thanks to everyone, and yes I am going to BC in the fall, just sent in all of the forms yesterday. I just crossed my fingers and prayed and I guess the prayers were answered.

notsurefor2006,

I wish you the best of luck in your studies at BC.

Oh, BTW, maybe you should think about changing your sn if you plan on sticking around for awhile. It just doesn't make much sense anymore!

All the best,
