overkill

namtrag- If your son was going to GT id swear you were my parent :) Except my SAT score wasnt that high, partly because I forgot my calculator and partly because of a party. High school was a cakewalk...but I realize that college is a whole different game, and I'm actually preparing to study and read books...something I think I did once or twice my freshman year. If he knows anything about college, and if he's as smart as you say...he should wise up and be fine

Sai is a genius.... Don't call him an idiot or he'll pwn you hahaha.

Seriously though, sai's $#!@ing smart, but I think average for Asians without prepping is about 1800.

I can see why you'd think 2100 is average though:

Oh, and I disagree with the whole 4.3 thing. A 4.3 isn't hard at all. To someone who takes 14 or 15 AP classes, a 4.3 is a student with 2 B's for every 4 A's. Not very hard.

is it even possible to take 14 or 15 ap's?

Umm, yes?

I've seen people at CC take 8 APs for Junior/Senior year, 4 APs Sophomore year, and 1 AP as a freshman.

21 APs.

Wow, our S school only offers maybe 10 AP classes. You young people probably don't realize this, but when I went to high school, we had no AP, no honors, only French and Spanish, and no math higher than Trig. I still got into W&M, and only had a 1260 SAT. I wouldn't even get into Va Tech now, much less W&M.

It seems so much harder now, but at the same time, it seems like wasted effort because it's all relative. You guys have to work so much harder to get into schools, but everybody is pretty much equal because everyone does all the AP's, EC's,etc.

My school only has AP English III and IV, AP US History, AP Calculus, AP Physics, AP Biology, and AP Chemistry. Really, though, Chemistry and Pyshics shouldn't be labeled as AP since our school doesn't have any science labs to speak of.

They're too busy getting artificial turf and a huge "state-of-the-art" fieldhouse for our football boys to actually provide students with decent learning facilities ::rolls eyes::. At least they built a new music building while I was there, though. I'm glad my senior year in band wasn't filled with girls screaming about rats/mice in the instrument room.

Ah yes namtrag, the old days. My school had college prep trac or vo-tech trac---no honors or anything like that--trig highest math, one year chem, one year physics, only latin, french and spanish--and just 2 years of those.

And Katho, back then it seemed most big money went to the football stadium too! And NO sports for girls except cheerleading.

Namtrag, your son is one of those few lucky people who manage to do well without putting in a ton of effort. I don't really see anything wrong with that. Some people have to study for hours to retain information, while others absorb it much more easily. I don't think this necessarily means his school has grade inflation or he has a very poor work ethic. I tend to be the same way; I work as hard as I need to for a good grade. I never considered myself an avid studier, but I also graduated high school with a 4.3 GPA.

Hopefully your son realizes that his level of work needed to get an A will probably have to increase once he enters college. If he realizes he may have to spend a little more time studying in college, I bet his natural smarts will continue to get him far.

I stand by my earlier post.
2100 is average for an asian without studying.

SAI: Wow, I hope you aren't a statistics major.

Maybe someone knows if we can find SAT averages by race to figure it out once and for all.

LisaG: Yeah, I think he will be fine if he doesn't get into the party scene too much. I am just a worrying Dad. I was also a lot like him and I turned out fine.

Sai, when you say "most Chinese could do it" would that be 65% or 90%? Second, remember that the SAT was recentered a decade ago so you need to bump up a pre 1995 score ~ 70 points on verbal to compare to today's scores. Even that may not be enough as a 1360 used to be the lowest 99% of the SAT, so after recentering, this would be a 1430, but I'm guessing that 1430 (before the addition of writing) would no longer be in the 99%.

I'm too amazed at the numbers of APs offered/taken and how calculus seems to be taken before senior year now. It seems that students could have enough credits to pass out of whole years of college, but since they will still need to take classes for major/distribution requirements, etc. don't really see what the point is of taking 16 AP tests.

Shoot, I didn't take any AP tests and am still starting college with 6 hours without taking a single college course. For some kids, the whole AP test thing is completely pointless.

mkm56: That I do. My own school disgusts me to no end sometimes. If we all came on CC we'd be flamed off the boards. Lol. And in case anyone's wonderng, I attend(ed) a 99.9% Asian high school.
