AH! I only have a few days left to make my decision. If you could answer this question (correction: Questions! Looks like I asked more than one!), that would be great!

How often do kids "overload" and take 5 classes a semester? I wouldn't be adding a class like Chem or Bio, but something from Theater Studies since I plan on double majoring between Theater Studies and something else. Would it be a little too tough with my other coursework and ECs? In general, what is the AVERAGE number of classes a Duke student takes by the time they graduate?

Thanks!

Most people overload 1-4 times by the time they graduate.

I have never overloaded, but I’ve seen people overload 5 semesters in a row (Sophmore/Junior year primarily) as a Econ/Math/BME major.

I don’t have any statistic for you, to see exactly how often students overload or don’t. What I can say, however, is that for the first-year and first semester, the vast majority of students do not overload, and stick to 4 classes. In your first semester, you want to focus on getting settled in, meeting people, and just in general, acclimating to the college environment.

Starting second semester, I would say around half of the people choose to overload. Of course, this is just potentially the people I hang out with, but overloading is a fairly common experience. If you want to double major, I think if you average 4.5 credits per semester, and maybe spend one summer getting credits, you’ll probably have ample for a double major and fulfilling Trinity requirements.
