there are two essay topics that i’ve been considering but both sound like totally out there… going to ask for opinion… come on… no one would steal my essay topics right? o.O; integrity ppl integrity! =D

there was a period in my life where, (i won’t go into self-pity and who had it worst game) but i was suicidal and go on from there into how it affected me

my ongoing and passionately deep (xP) love relationship of very abnormal circumstances (don’t ask… details are not necessary)

or should i keep with more conventional essays that talk about my EC passions (which mean no less to me) and the other about a problem in society i see today?

I recommend that you don't write on anything that suggests you might be emotionally-troubled or mentally-ill. You don't want them to think they will we taking on a load of problems and crises if they admit you.

if you're a good writer, number two could be very, very good, as i think i share the same passion. if you aren't a really good writer, it could be horrifyingly bad. share it with some english teachers/intelligent adults after you write it and ask them if they think it's well written or not and go from there. but don't do the conventional for harvard, they have to remember you.

lol i'm not mentally ill or anything!! just overcoming that period in my life really made me the person i am today (more appreciative etc.) =)

thank you all for your input and comments! however, still torn and undecided, any more opinions please?

and ! is it agreeable that conventional essays such as EC passion and problems in society would not be as "memorable" (good word shaganov!) as the previous two i suggested?

but for common app something more conventional would be better right?

go for the writing part! decide later about the sending part :)

I think its hard to put a lot of soul into writing something if something important is not going to happen to that writing...
but just decide now that you will use essays on those topics...write them with extra time to spare before the deadline...then decide if they're amazing or ask someone to read, and you'll know if you will use those or need to write other essays (for which you'll have that spare time)
and if these topics influenced your identity, even if you later decide not to use them in an application, writing the essays will be meaningful

Write about both of them in one essay.. how you came out of that dark suicidal period of your life a better man and how you now see the true beauties of life...

i'm not a man...... ;_____; do i sound like a man?!?!? sobs !! no one's going to want me anymore!!

=D oooh very insightful! that's exacty what i did mr. prophet! however, as all my previous attempts at college essays do...... it got waaaay too long..

shall we start a thread? =D but people are touchy about their essays.. well ! at least posting them (which is obvious though in the college discussions one guy actually asked people to post their essays =O can we say "_____"?). so dunno, i would be very much interested though.

Sorry. You misunderstood. I'm just saying that pretty much everyone knows that suicide and depression are some of the most taboo essay topics. I didnt mean that you are dumber than my dog or anything along those lines.

If you can communicate that you have really overcome your depression, it may be a good topic. However, few people can say they're 100% out of depression, no matter how much time has passed. You have to convincingly present yourself as capable of handling Harvard's coursework.

As for #2, it sounds interesting. I know you don't want us to ask, but I must admit I am curious... Any examples you want to share?

lol i will pm you. well ! first, are you appying this year EA also? just, as anyone would, i feel like saying too much would lead to another essay topic that closely resembles my passion on this topic (though by no means do i expect someone else to have the same situations)
