At the beginning of my sophomore year, they gave us all transcripts. The only grades that were on it were from ninth and eighth grade. My UW gpa was a 3.1/3.2 (I can’t remember) After two semesters with all core classes honors and all four electives college prep, my GPA was then 3.63. My gpa has a (I think) strong uptrend. I don’t think it will be very hard to have it up to a 3.7/3.75 by the time I apply for colleges, which is next year, I’m a rising junior.
Also. My school offers zero AP courses for freshmen or sophomores, and now I’m rushing to get as many AP classes in as I can but in order to do so, I can’t take a third foreign language (french) but I am trying to learn it independently. Would it be worth really trying to learn french and try to take the AP french exam next year?
Why are you so desperate to take as many AP tests as possible? If it is for college admissions that really isn’t necessary… AP tests don’t carry THAT much of a weight. Better off making sure you do well in the classes that you are taking, rather than trying to learn another language.
You are worrying about this too much.
If your HS only allows juniors and seniors to take AP classes, then that information will be part of the school profile that is sent along with your transcript when you apply to college. There is no need for you to rush to get as many AP classes as possible. Just take the ones that are meaningful for you as a student. Your guidance counselor will be able to let you know how many AP classes would be needed for you to have the “most rigorous” program that your school offers.
If you want to study French on your own, that is fine. But it isn’t likely that you will be able to get to the AP level in just one year through independent study. Devote that energy to your other classes instead.
its not that i’m desperate, it’s just that I understand that there are tons of kids that have taken 10 or 11 ap classes and I’d like to be a competitive candidate.
I find it hard to believe that a lot of kids have done ten or more APs if they can only do them as juniors or seniors. Our school is the same, and the most I have heard of anyone doing is 8. Schedule conflicts are the main reason. In any case, you do not need that many APs to be a competitive student. 6-8 is regarded as being a good number.
Re self studying AP French, my D did the test this year and she has been doing it in school. She thinks she got a 2. It is a very tough test. By all means try, but colleges are not that impressed by self-studied APs. If you are planning on studying French further, then go for it, because that shows commitment and interest.
If by tons you mean hundreds, yes. Otherwise I really doubt it. Many HSs don’t offer APs.
Most schools in our area don’t offer AP classes to freshman and sophomores.
Students have to do summer assignments and qualify for entry. Each school district is different. My kids found out that AP test scores just give you college elective credit. Why are you worrying about them so much? It’s not a race!
Just get good grades in your classes. GPA and SAT/ACT matter more than APs.
Oh and 8th grade report cards aren’t used in the high school GPA calculation.
Oh. Is this still true if I took algebra 1 and english 1 in eighth grade?
Sorry, I wasn’t very clear. I meant that other kids from other schools have taken APs all four years of high school
