Overnight at Brown

I’m sorry if there is already a thread for this, but I am a new user. My daughter thinks she will apply early decision to Brown for Fall 2011 entry, but I am unsure given we were not at least taken thru a dorm when we visited in March 2010. Does Brown do overnight visits? How do you get more personal attention at the Admissions Office? I found them to be a little cold and obviously harried (although this didn’t bother my daughter…didn’t even notice).

Any advice would be appreciated.

Overnight visits set up through the Admissions Office are limited to admitted RD students on 3 or 4 specific days in April (in part due to the cost and the demands on space that these visits entail when done in mass). There aren’t, however, any rules forbidding you from setting something up yourself. If your daughter knows anyone at Brown, she would be more than welcome to get in touch with them and try to schedule an overnight if their roommate (if applicable) was willing. Many teachers are willing to let prospective students sit in on classes, so she could even spend the whole day with the friend and get a full experience, potentially.

If she doesn’t know anyone at Brown, some students around campus would gladly show her their dorm. Not everyone would (letting someone you don’t know into your dorm is generally frowned upon for safety reasons), but it wouldn’t hurt to try asking a few students.

What sort of more personal attention are you interested in receiving? March is a pretty bad time for them; I didn’t experience them being cold during my visit in the summer (or in April after I was accepted). Sometimes it’s also a question of where the line between “being cold” and “following policy” is.

I’ll gladly answer any further questions you may have.

We definitely do host overnight visits. I hosted someone in my room about a month into fall semester last year. I’m not sure about the exact details on where/when/how to sign up though…

I believe Uroogla is referring to A Day on College Hill (ADOCH). But I’m quite sure they guy I hosted last fall was a high school senior considering applying to Brown. The whole thing lasted about a week with a different batch of seniors everyday. If I’m not wrong the Bruin Club was running the thing, and they even organised little basketball (or was it volleyball?) games for them.

Unless they decided to get rid of it this year?

I was referring to ADOCH and was unaware of further overnight opportunities - I can’t find anything referring to this on the admissions site or the Bruin Club site - it may be worth your time to get in touch with them and ask.

@aleph0 - by whom were you contacted concerning hosting? They may be the people to sign up with.

A hall mate of mine was with the Bruin Club (I think), and she went around knocking on doors asking people if they would be willing to host.

Getting in touch with the Bruin Club would likely be a good place to start, then. Even if they don’t run it themselves, they’d likely be able to point you in the right direction.

I hosted someone in October last year. Contact admissions/the Bruin Club, and if that fails… contact me. (I am a female incoming sophomore with two clean-living roommates and a nice, big, sleep-able couch.)
