Congrats to everyone accepted to Cal Berkeley today! I got in from Colorado, and its been over a year since I visited the campus so I definitely plan to attend their overnight program. Before I book flights and all that, I was wondering if from previous experience anyone could tell me if most kids come alone or bring their parents with them.

I'm not sure what to do. On one hand I want my dad to come so he can better help with my decision making process, and on the other I know I'll feel ridiculous having him come all the way out with me and then saying, "okay, bye, go have fun alone in a hotel tonight."

I think most students come alone since they are in-state.

But it wouldn’t hurt for your dad to come along. He could check out the campus himself so he can feel more comfortable about having you at Berkeley.

There are always a good amount of parents that come along.

The parents have the chance to be in the program too, but they are strictly segregated from you and the other students. The parents dorm together in a separate building, have completely separate meetings and basically you don’t see them but they are able to ask questions, listen to lots of presentations tuned to parents whose kids are going to college, and gives them a bit of the Cal spirit to jazz them up. They learn to dance the ‘time warp’ from Rocky Horror, I heard.

I agree with cnat that there are a fair number of parents, so you won’t look out of place or unusual, but they are herded away quite well by the CalSO staff to leave just you and your peers together.
