^ D’s visit is this Wednesday. Muhlenberg matched her up with a host for the day and D had a chance to speak with her last night. It is interesting to see how Muhlenberg handles student visits compared to other schools, it is very personalized. D will meet with a professor in her intended major, and attend 3 classes. Most colleges allow only 1 class, 2 max, but Muhlenberg has her attending a First Year Seminar, a Psychology course and a dance course. In addition she will have her interview at the end of the day. She is going to be hungry, I think I forgot about including lunch for her. Oh well, she can tough it out with a protein bar. I will let you know how it goes.

good luck!! I loved the dining options when i went. Really good compared to any of the schools i have seen, even the big ones with 10x as many kids

i’ll send you a PM alliep :)

hey… how did her visit go?

We just got back on Wed night from our looong trip to Muhlenberg (came from Arizona). I second the recommendation of staying at the Wingate. Everyone there was extremely nice and the customer service was terrific. There are smoking and non-smoking rooms. We had a non-smoking and had no odor at all. I did notice an odd “old” smell sometimes in the hallways though. I absolutely LOVED the indoor hot tub and used it every night They also have a wonderful free breakfast every morning (scrambled eggs, bacon, make your own waffles, yogurt, cereal, bagels, etc) and a free weekday manager’s reception with soda, wine, beer, sandwiches, etc.

Our daughter did two days at the Berg. Monday was her audition for the Theater Director and sitting in on a three hour acting class. He also invited her to attend a rehearsal from 7pm-11pm. The next day was our campus tour and her interview with admissions. The campus is really beautiful and smaller than we imagined. Freshman only have maybe a 5 min walk from dorm to class! She already loved the idea of Muhlenberg, but now feels like she doesn’t even want to consider another school.

I think our Wednesday visit might have been a classic example of where you set your expectations prior to the visit. My D had low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. On the other hand, I had set very high expectations that were probably impossible to meet. I thought it was a very good school but not quite what I was expecting. D really liked it though and that is all that matters.

Part of the problem may have been our tour guide. She never smiled once, looked like she just woke up and just read from a script. Every college has that one unenthusiastic tour guide and I guess it was our luck of the draw. The other thing that stood out was how often the tour guide brought up the large percentage of Jewish students and all the clubs and activities for Jewish students. One of the parents on the tour asked me if Muhlenberg was a Jewish school since he thought it was Lutheran related. I fully appreciate religious diversity but this was a little overwhelming.

The campus was very nice and seemed a little larger than it actually was, a very good use of space. D loved her classes and the highlight of the trip for her was when one of the dance students volunteered to show her the dance studios. It was also nice to see a campus that appeared to be “clique” free. The students were some of the friendliest we have seen on any campus. Another nice surprise was the Physical Activity Center, a very modern facility with a large cardio mezzanine and weight room as well as olympic size pool.

Another plus is that the general education requirements are not so harsh and time consuming as many of the LAC’s we have seen. It allows for easy double majors or minors. The classes D attended were small and had some discussion based element to them. Her interview went extremely well. I honestly thought D would not like the college because of the campus size and tour guide (which unfortunately sets the tone for her, we have never been to a college with a bad tour guide that she showed any interest in after the visit). However, proving that I should never try to predict what a teenage girl is thinking, she really liked the school. It was also nice that it is the only school she is considering that is a reasonable drive from home. I am not sure if she will want to change her application to ED status right now since she never seems to want to share that information with her parents. God forbid we were to actually know what she thinks. However, the trip exceeded her expectations.

The Wingate was a great recommendation, very nice hotel with friendly staff. As far as smoking smell, I thought I saw a sign in the lobby that said the hotel was 100% smoking free. Thanks to everyone for their feedback and recommendations!

hey glad to hear it went so well :)

i also loved the gym they had there… seemed really nice

I am sorry that you had a poor tour guide on your visit. My daughter is a freshman this year and loves the school. We visited 17 schools and this was the number one choice by my husband and I. She wanted to go to Bard and didn’t really pay attnetion to detail on the first visit. When we narrowed the search down to the top 5 on the second visit she was impressed. So far we all find the students to be very friendly and have lots of school spirit. I was visitng on Sunday and a large number of students were wearing Muhlenberg clothing. This says a lot about how the kids feel about the school. Every contact we have had with any type of administation had been very pleasant and professional. Move in day was very orgnaized and there was plenty of staff there to help. They even gave us directions to local stores. The classes are challenging and they have plenty of evening sessions for help and review for tests. It is a Lutheren school and the Jewish population is at least 1/3 of the school. There is a Hillel program that runs a lot of social events and all the students are welcome. I am not under the impression that if you are not Jewish that it is a problem. My daughter is very happy there and that makes us happy. She is not coming home that often and that speaks for itself. I would strongly suggest you contact the admissions office and discuss your experience with them. I am sure they would want to know about it.

If I remember correctly the library has lots of places to relax and study. I would suggest going in and asking for an overview from the front desk. Also when we toured the staff at the Hillel were amazingly friendly.Kids could do their laundry there and even had input on the snack shopping list.Very friendly and welcoming campus, safe neighborhood.

They also have a multi curtural center to do the same. I beleive there is no charge for the laundry and there is a large screen TV. The director I think is names Robin and she is a wonderful person. The whole college is a warm and family friendly place. A large majority of the students go early decision.

I do not have a child attending Muhlenberg but I do live a block from the school. BobbyCT asked about the Jewish population. It is a Lutheran school but has many Jewish students. For years, students from NJ, NY & CT attend Muhlenberg for their premed program. It’s excellent. Many of the doctors and dentists here in Lehigh Valley are Muhlenberg grads. The Trexler library is beautiful probably nicer than some of larger more well known schools. Muhlenberg has a great location in the west end of Allentown. There are gorgeous parks nearby. Also, a great Farmer’s Market which is within walking distance from Muhlenberg. Plus, Wegman’s is 5 minutes away by car. It’s nice to see so many positive comments about my neighborhood college.

Hillel also does a bi-weekly bagel brunch, open to anyone. I never miss it :)

I’m a sophomore (theater major, public health/women’s studies double minor) at Berg and am willing to answer any questions anyone might have!

ronib321 - I would LOVE to live in one of the many gorgeous houses that surround Muhlenberg. It’s a beautiful neighborhood!

hi im a senior and trying to decide whether to apply early decision?? im really concerned about the weekends bc i live kindof far?? wats it like is it dead?? parties?? thanks

I live 6.5 hours away so I can never go home on weekends, but take it from me, don’t worry. There’s usually one weekend per semester (about halfway through) when it seems like EVERYONE goes home for the weekend… kind of weird, haha. But other than that, most people usually stay. There are usually plenty of parties to go to, if you know the right people.
