Overnight visit

Hello,
We were thinking of sending our daughter for a visit now that she has been accepted. We thought she could get a better sense if she stayed with a student. Does Vanderbilt do this?? Thank you!

Does VU have an admitted students day? Has registration opened. I saw something about 4/17 or 4/18 but I didn’t see anywhere for the student to register.

Dore-for-a-Day is just a daytime program. I don’t think the school offers an over-night stay anymore, probably some sort of liability issue. It could be arranged privately through a student.

There is no admitted students day. There should be events in your nearest metro area to meet other admitted students and local alums.

As you asking about registration for courses? That won’t happen for quite some time. You’ll be receiving all the information you need from Vanderbilt, usually in a big booklet called “Road to Vanderbilt.” It will very clearly explain everything from registering to classes to moving in.

Here’s the 2014 version if you’re really curious:

Thanks @pancaked.

@4CookieMonster, there are admitted student days (“open houses”). Here’s the link: http://admissions.vanderbilt.edu/visit/admitted-students.php

I would highly encourage you to attend if you can - it’s what solidified Vandy for me! This holds true for all schools - I don’t think anything can substitute a full day on campus, getting both information and the general “feel” of the school. I hope your daughter loves Vandy, and congrats on her admission!

with 31 thousand applicants and all the year round tours required, Vanderbilt stopped offering overnights as a program in the dorms except for Mosaic Weekend and there may be some student accomodations for Ingram finalist weekend. I would suggest that you have her stay in a hotel near campus where she can walk if you can’t accompany her. Although we were able to drive there with our Vandyson in April, I saw students who were there unaccompanied. Most students have a family member with them. There are four or five or six hotels on foot…near the campus itself and Scarritt offers very basic rooms with shared hall baths for about 55 dollars in their little hotel. Honestly, I will venture an opinion. I think overnights in dorms are over-rated.

It’s sort of like judging a city based on your tour guide or the weather. Plus seniors in high school need a good night’s sleep, not sleeping on the floor. Our sons did a handful of overnights. Things I recall include: a frat boy who didn’t want a Prospie and went out till 3am to a party without leaving my son so much as a key to the room (his frat signed him up as a “joke”)…that was Duke btw. My son spent the 24 hours alone and still decided to attend by coming to his own conclusions and impressions. A very nice Davidson boy host who did make some effort but had studies of his own to do so son spent a lot of time doing nothing. A nice Vanderbilt sophomore back in 2004 who introduced our son to a couple of people so he could have lunch with someone but he was himself too busy to spend time with him. A guy who wanted to play beer pong with our high school senior.

If your student has a career path that she has questions about prepping for…there are ways to connect with students on that pathway by email or phone.

Nashville hotels have a bad habit of selling out due to the multiple events going on in the city at all times so if you need a hotel recommendation…there are parents here will will chime in.

Attending a class and simply sitting in the library during evening study hours and or hanging about the school coffee shop when students are actually working will give you some sense of things.
