I know MIT offers overnight visit to potential applicants. Does anyone know other colleges that make similar arrangements?
My S gets 2 day off from school in senior year for college visits. We are discussing how to use that opportunity smartly. Isn't participating in overnight visit worth?

Tons. Too many to list.

Harvard has an overnight visit program, but for high reach schools like MIT or Harvard, I’d hold off on the overnight visit until you have an acceptance in hand and are trying to decide which school to actually attend. In fact I think that is good advice for pretty much all schools, not just reaches. You don’t need an overnight to decide whether to apply - a tour and info session is sufficient for that. But it might be useful in deciding which of the schools to pick from among those that have offered acceptances.

As I checked other schools - U Mich, UVA, Emory, Vanderbilt, Amherst, I did not find overnight visit or similar things.
coureur, did you have experience in some of them?
If my S takes 2 days off and visit a far distance school, I’m wondering if it might be worth spending a night there.

I think a fall overnight can be a good idea if you are considering an ED application. My D is doing one to be absolutely sure the ED school is her first choice. She is also going to visit classes, interview and do the other usual stuff.

If you want to “maximize” your two days…visit more than one school and do NOT spend the night anywhere. DD’s college only has overnights for ACCEPTED students. In our experience, this is more typical.

If you go to one school and spend the night, you will be using those two days to visit only ONE school. It is very possible to see two schools in two days…perhaps there is another school close enough to the first school where your kiddo has some interest as well.

^^^ My ds, too.

Regarding overnight visits…all the private LACs that my daughter applied to offered overnight visits to ADMITTED students. She took advantage of I think 4 of them and they really helped her in her final decision. The school she ultimately chose had a 2 night event for admitted students. In most cases they will get to sleep in a dorm, eat in the dining hall and attend a class. This is a great way to make the final decision but I think a waste of good time if they haven’t applied yet. Use your 2 days (or more if you can use weekends or an occasional “sick” day on a Friday) to do regular visits/tours at as many schools as possible. Save the overnights for the very few top choices that they are admitted to. They are held in the spring and by that time a senior really can miss a bit more school in order to make this important decision.
