Overnight?

I was accepted to Fordham EA. I've already toured the campus, but I want to do an overnight stay to get a better feel for the school. I'm trying to decide between two very different schools, and I think that the overnight might really make the difference.

I heard that overnights are by invitation only. I was expecting an invitation to come with my acceptance--but nothing was mentioned. I've looked online and on the Fordham website, but there's very little information about setting one up.

Has anyone done one/know how to set one up? I'd like to do one in January or February if possible. I haven't had much luck contacting the admissions office in previous cases (nor with calling for that matter).

Perhaps I can help…male or female? Yes, overnights can help. But they also do an accepted student orientation weekend both for EA and for RD, which happen BEFORE the deadline for acceptance in May occurs. I HIGHLY recommend going to that as well, because its very well done, it includes clubs, students, faculty, administrators, campus ministry, food, fun, games and Fr. McShane’s famous “closer speech” which is awesome.

They don’t want too many kids asking for overnights, because its cumbersome to arrange and they don’t want too much distraction for students (who don’t return to classes until the 19th of January.)

So first call admissions and ask when the accepted student orientation is going to be for EA students (I think its in February…the RD one is in April). That is your best bet. But if you really insist on an overnight in the dorm, then you can also call ResLife (number on website) and ask them to arrange it for you…they will put you in touch likely with an RA in one of the dorms. I recommend Queens Court.

What other school are you comparing to Fordham?

I agree with ghostbuster, I’d first attend the accepted students day. My S did two overnights at two other schools, but felt that his opinions of those schools became very dependent on who the school happens to set him up with. He thought the accepted student day at Fordham was at least as helpful as the overnights. He was also able to catch our tourguide and a couple of friends of hers after the tour was completed and get some lingering questions answered in a casual setting which was great. And yes, it is absolutely worth hearing Father McShane’s speech!!

I’ll definitely be attending the EA accepted students day. I snooped around on the website a bit more…I think the days are February 16 and 19.

The only difficulty for me is that I live in Chicago, so it’s a bit of a hike out to New York. The other school I’m considering is University of Chicago, and I’ve already managed to set up an overnight (much easier when you’re just a train ride away!) I’ll work on Fordham a bit…I’ll go to the admitted students day, and I’ll see if I can figure out an overnight at the same time.

Thanks for all your help!

I am certain that ResLife can arrange an overnight during the Orientation in February, so you can avoid a hotel bill and see the campus as it really is. If that doesnt work out, ping me and I will let my D1 know and they will handle it personally. My D1 is best friends with a leader in the RA crowd and others associated with recruiting Fordham students.

Comparing UChicago and Fordham will be good, but they are very different colleges with different good points and bad points. If its simply prestige and rankings UChicago will beat Fordham. But look a little deeper and at the quality of life at Fordham and the friendships and AMAZING connections for jobs in New York, plus its Jesuit, and the opportunities to shine at Fordham.

Let me know. We will be there for you as Fordham family. But ResLife can also set this up rather easily. Just call them or email them after the first of the year. University is closed now for holidays.

Fordham is a serious academic school for those interested in true scholarship. But its also a lot of fun.
