Overrated and Underrated Top Universities

Haha, I guess some people from the northeast are kind of jealous of our weather, but they certainly don't hate us. In the Dartmouth bubble there are people from all over...my roommates are from Texas and Oregon, my next door neighbors are from New Jersey, Alaska, and CA (the bay area, specifically). So no one geographic region really gets ganged up on. (Well, maybe occasionally in good-natured teasing between friends). I have encountered a few people who think the stereotypes are all true, but that actually can be pretty funny. I remember someone asked me if I surfed, and I told him "Are you kidding? I surfed to school everyday." And he believed me. Haha I set him straight later...He, and some of my other friends, have never been to California (gasp), so we're trying to arrange spending spring break in CA.

College kids are pretty much the same no matter what coast you go to. I'm sorry that studying far away wasn't an option, but you definitely had amazing schools close by. UCLA and USC are both awesome schools with great college experiences,. (I have friends at each, so I've heard first-hand.) Actually, my best friend would give her right arm to go to USC--it was her first choice, and she got in, but financial reasons prevented her from going. She's going to city college for the time being and wants to transfer to a UC in two years. It broke my heart (and certainly hers.)

Hmm, I don't know. I think the college kids in the Midwest are the best :)

Lol. You go to Northwestern? That's awesome. I looked into it because of its amazing reputation for journalism. Do you know what you're majoring in yet?

I have no idea, lol... Journalism, Poli sci, English, History, Econ... one of these.. maybe, lol. How about you?

I believe that for Journalism at NU you have to be admitted to the School of Journalism.

Ha, History, English, art history, econ, classics, poli sci. Pretty similar. I don't think Dartmouth has a specific journalism major, which is why I didn't put that...I write for the news section of The Dartmouth, though. Do you write for a paper?

TheDad: indeed one does have to be admitted to the School of Journalism to major in journalism, however, any NU student can apply for an inter-school transfer.

Kelseyo8: The Daily Northwestern is pretty competitive, in terms of getting articles; however, it's easier to get them into the Northwestern Chronicle, so I have written a few things for the latter.

KK, NU was the first college my D visited, during 9th grade, so my memory is hazy. But if I recall correctly, transferring in to Medill (Journalism) successfully is difficult. Our tour guide actually talked about this in specific detail. I think she was in Medill.

i think to establish what is overrated and what is overrated, we have to have some standard to go by.

TheDad,

You are correct. It's difficult but not impossible. Dang..NU is more than just journalism. LOL!

Can someone please explain to me what is so great about Michigan? I am not saying it is an overrated school but I just do not see what is so amazing about it. I mean they have this highly ranked business school yet they do not even have my business major (supply chain management/logistics). Also, all the kids from my school that applied there got in but chose to go other places such as Wisconsin. Lastly, Penn State is underrated. This school offers every kind of major you could imagine and has something for everyone. They would not have the largest and most active alumni association in the country if it did not offer a great education. At least that is my opinion....

Michigan State pioneered Supply Chain Management/Logistics. MSU is top ranked together with MIT in this field.

I presume you are currently in college majoring in Supply Chain Management. Where may I ask are you going to school, and how do you like the SCM program there?

SamLee, that's my point: I'm not saying transferring into Journalism is impossible but one shouldn't think it's a breeze...file a piece of paper and you're in...and there's a high probability that you will be denied.

University of Michigan is strong in both social sciences/humanities AND sciences. Its difficult for any university to reach that much in depth, in that many different disciplines. Its pretty amazing too because three of the five universities that I consider to be most balanced in social sciences and sciences are public. (Berkeley, UCLA, UMich, Harvard, Stanfurd)

BTW I must say that UT Austin is an underrated school. I've met lots of smart people from that school, and my gut feeling is that UT Austin is underrated. Yes, even if it is in a Bush state, you gotta call it like it is. (Just like you gotta call Ukraine/Ohio revote like it is)

just because the school doesn't offer your major doesn't mean its not good.

I go to PSU and I have not taken any main supply chain courses yet. However, I have the most interest in that major at the moment and it is very popular at PSU.

Atlantic Monthly ranks top 10

UT is one of the most underrated schools in the US. I got their back.

JHU is very underrated and Harvard is overrated for undergrad.
