What schools do you think are the most overrated? Underrated?

I’ve always felt that Reed Colleges in Portland, OR is underrated because it refuses to submit information to rankings institutitions. It sends a very high percentage of its graduates on to master’s and doctoral programs.

Underrated – institutions that focus on undergraduates

Overrated – those that don’t.

Interestingly enough I saw a list in a college guide of overrated schools. Harvard and Yale were 1-2. Granted in that same guide they were 1-2 in top schools, also, but I found it interesting.

But, as a midwesterner, I believe that while a very good school, WashU is overrated. Many people I’ve talked to consider it the top midwestern university hands down. I myself would rank Northwestern and UChicago ahead of WashU easily, With Michigan very, very close.

Really??? If you go to the WashU board, there are many students that feel that the school is underrated. NW and UChicago definitely gets more national recognition. I do think that most of Ivies, large well known public universities (Berkeley, etc…) are better for graduate studies and some of the lesser known yet great schools (WashU, Rice) are better for undergraduate.

Yeah, Reed comes to mind as very underrated.

In the west I would say that many small, eastern LACs are underrated.

I think Harvard, Stanford, Yale, etc are probably overrated. I don’t mean that they aren’t fantastic schools, but they are so venerated and worshipped that I can hardly imagine any school is really worth that level of obsession.

Overrated = Brown, Dartmouth, most of the top LACs.

Underrated = Berkeley and few other top state research universities (UIUC, UMich, etc.); UChicago; Columbia.

Overrated: starting new threads about the same topics
Underrated: using the search function

I can summarize the responses that will inevitably follow.

Overrated: schools people don’t like
Underrated: schools people like/attend

Wow, say what you really think.

The internet has done nothing to promote good manners. IB if you don’t like the topic don’t join the conversation. It’s not necessary to be rude.

I can find quite a few more, if you’d like.

I’m not a rude person; I just get very frustrated when the same threads get posted again and again. This sort of thread usually results in the bashing of very good schools (Berkeley, WUStL, Duke, etc.), which I don’t care for at all. I would have much less of a problem if it was only about underrated colleges.

How long is it before somebody posts “Harvard”?

See post #7.

^Not too long.

I say Harvard, Princeton, UCLA, MIT, NYU, Stanford, and a bunch of others are overrated.

I’d say Vandy, Rice, Emory, SMU, Tufts, and may good, small public schools are underrated.

P.S. If you get angry at me telling my opinion, you might be a little to sensitive.

IB

There are new people on this forum all the time. Those people have questions and thoughts. Perhaps they would like a fresh insight, or to hear from those people who don’t have 900 or 9000 posts attributed to them.

My point is that it isn’t necessary for you to even OPEN a thread if the title annoys you. I have no interest in many of the threads on this forum. Many, many subjects are discussed endlessly (HYP comes to mind) and ad nauseum but I don’t chime in and tell them to look at every other thread that says exactly the same thing. I let them have their conversation.

My goodness, do you float around cocktail parties and declare other people’s conversations redundant and pointless? Just move on.

Obviously, I haven’t been here as long as you have – I’ve only had my account for like 4 months while you’ve had yours for over 4 years. I haven’t seen the same threads as you have and I didn’t know the search function even existed. There is really no reason to be rude. A nice “This thread already exists. [insert link here]” would have sufficed.

Overrated: Being rude and snippy to people you don’t even know over the internet.
Underrated: Kindness & being helpful.

…anyway.

I personally think Rutgers is extremely underrated.

Overrated: Grinnell, NYU, Harvard for undergrad
Underrated: Reed, Brandeis

underrated - the decent colleges that accepted me
overrated - the good colleges that rejected me

Forum members all over the internet shed a tear.

Didn’t know the search function existed? Have you never been on any forum anywhere? There is always a search function. I find it interesting that you are familiar enough with forums to know how to use italics but not familiar enough to use the search function.
