wish the hookup scene was more prevalent for commuters lol

To CoolBreeze and Multitasker, all of that hooking up I heard about is something I expected out of college since it happens at so many schools… But not as often as mine. That’s why I said it’s overrated haha, I don’t see any of the signals (rubberband, cloth, etc.) on any knobs and usually the hook-up vibes at the parties I go to are dead. I think the culture is different where I’m at - not only am I in Montana (kinda a boring place, nothing to do. Not to mention there’s only 1,000,000 in the entire state) but there are more men than there are women at my particular university. Most of the men are creepy small-towners that haven’t gotten sexual energy out of their system since there’s basically no social scene when they have 4 ugly girls to grow up with without access to teenage lounges and clubs and all that. And that kinda ruins it for the other men because once a guy trying to hook up is overly aggressive, girls get scared away from the idea of one-night hook ups. Idk, kind of disappointing that my university isn’t as exciting in that aspect of life compared to larger universities with different cultures.

I’m probably one of those creepy small towners… I am a Montanan. are you at the university of montana?

Hahaha I meant no offense toward you if you live in a small town, it was an exaggeration. There are a lot of horny/aggressive farmer dudes at my school though… just saying. And no I don’t, I attend Broseman, Mantana :). Wow didn’t think I’d find a Montanan on here.

It’s okay. I’m in Kalispell and I’ll be going to the university of MT starting Spring semester. also, I agree, people here are more conservative.

don’t talk so fast…I love that show and Abed is definitely the best character

Overrated-

Almost everything…I got into a so called “tip top school” and it turned out to be a serious disappointment. I’ve been to my sisters college as well as my new college and to be honest, I don’t think I will ever fully understand how college came to be so vastly over-hyped.

Notable mentions-

Dorms- Hmm, I am not against centralized living, but having to sleep with someone else in the room just seems really gay to me.

“freshman experience”- Either both my colleges did a bad job at this, or I think this is just politically correct nonsense, full of boring informational speeches and brochures.

“party scene”- It could be just my personal experience, but I found life on campus to be extremely dull and boring, to say the least.

Meal Plans- These probably aren’t overrated that much, but they seem to be just another way for the college to make money.

Classes and Professors- I may be alone here again but so far my classes are there for professors to ramble for an hour and make themselves show superiority over youngens. None have been eye opening or inspiring and most of them are like tour guides for the outrageously priced textbooks required for the class.

Underrated-

The Library- I love love the library, since I can find a ton of books, and even some rare academic books that are hard to download via torrent or to buy at Barnes and Noble.

Overall, though, I feel college is basically just a scam.

I never understood the whole thing about “cliques”, I always assumed that was just a movie thing. My high school was nothing like that.

Of course, my high school was insane and over crowded. There were probably too many people to tell what the “cliques” were.

College kind of is a scam. You’re paying far, far too much for bad food and tiny rooms. You pay too much to park your own car. Meal plans are most definitely a scam. What individual needs to spend $1500(or more!) in a semester’s time to pay for food?! You pay too much to take the same basic classes you just took in high school. They don’t have anything to do with your major and are required because the college/state feels you need them (aka, they need the money from them). You’re paying a fortune to learn the skills you need for a career that you may or may not even have success with. The whole idea of college is kind of strange when you really think about it…

Oh, and underrated:

buying books used online or at a used bookstore that’s not your school’s store! Freshmen are always panicking about the cost of books because they get to school and think they need all these hundreds of dollars to buy books from the bookstore to have them ready for the first day of class. Or worse, before the semester began they pre-ordered online without finding out if they really even need that book for that class! For some majors, sure, the books get really expensive, but it’s not that hard to find fairly inexpensive copies of books for general education classes. Plus some professors end up not even requiring the book or will let you buy an older (aka, cheaper) version.

my highschool was strong with cliques… but not like in movies. There were the Hicks (cowbow types with boots and skin tight jeans). I was part of 2 or 3,. i would just choose which one I want that day. um, there were intellectuals… and there were athletic types… and people who are in honors classes or get very high GPAs. the athletic guys were not jerks though… that was one of my cliques. Oh yeah, and guys obsessed with cars and trucks. we had one clique that was just this hot, extroverted hippie chick and all the guys who loved her and one obese goth type. oh yeah, goths… but that was in 2000… and goths called emo now?

I’m finding a lot of my overrateds and underrateds overlapping. I go to a small LAC, so obviously a lot is specific to that environment.

Overrated:
Apartments - Everyone hurries to move into the apartments, but they aren’t great either. Even though they’re on-campus housing, they’re barely part of the community, they’re far from the academic buildings and other housing, and ResLife basically forgets you exist. Housing price-gouges you, then still expects you to pay your own utilities. The walls are paper thin, and things fall apart pretty easily. Thankfully Physical Plant is pretty legit.
Dorms - They’re tiny, filled with mold, and people will steal your kitchenware out of the kitchen. Also…if your friend ends up in a wheelchair halfway through the year, good luck getting them to their room…even inside the building.
Cliques - The school is small, so everyone just forms their friend groups and don’t hang out outside of them ever. It’s really hard to make new friends after the first month or two.
Dating scene - 55% female school, and a lot of the guys are gay. There’s no real dating culture, and that’s one thing I really envy from more religious colleges. You just have to date your friends or a friend of a friend.
Dances/parties - the music is awful, and everyone dances (bump and grind, mostly) in couples. You can’t really meet people at them, and you have to be drunk to enjoy them.
Roommates - Becoming or being best friends with your roommates ruins everything. Mild friends works, but not best friends. I’m living with an ex-best friend at the moment, and it’s really awful.
Drama (angst kind)
Hipsters
Freshman year - Everyone cares about you as a freshman. No one cares about you as a sophomore.
Psychology and Pre-Med

Underrated:
Talking to professors - At this school, professors are incredibly accommodating and understanding. You can get a lot of leniency if you just learn how to ask.
Food - Our cafeteria food is pretty good, quite a bit of variety.
Gym - I’m not an athlete or even very coordinated, but the gym is an amazing resource while you have it.
Apartments - Privacy is amazing, as is not dying of mold poisoning. It’s also a much bigger responsibility, and you start feeling like an adult.
Classes - I’ve learned so much in three semesters. Our classes are rarely BS.
Clubs - You have a lot more free time than you imagine you’ll have.
Personal growth - You change sooooooo much in so little time.

This is largely negative, because I’m starting to realize I don’t fit in that well, and college does feel like one big scam now.

Overrated: Perfection - this is the ONLY college that will be perfect for me, and if I don’t get in I’ll be terribly unhappy.

Underrated: The ability of many colleges to deliver not just a solid education but a great overall experience.

:-)

ADSRSM - I agree with the “Mild Friend” roommate. That’s who I was put with and it’s been so much better than the roommates that started as best friends and want to kill each other now.

underrated
community colleges. vastly underrated. i wish i would have gone to one to save a lot of moolah because freshman and sophomore year are complete bs to be wasted away with stupid gen-eds.

You guys sound like you need to grow up because you sound like a bunch of drama queens.

Overrated:
-price but doesn’t really matter because I have a full scholarship
-learning, someone talked about not being inspired by their professors. That had to have been the most hilarious thing I’ve heard all day. You go to college to get a degree and network yourself (it’s not about what you know, it’s who you know).
-morning classes, they are too early
-graduating in 4 years
-walking to class during winter, takes about 15-20 minutes to walk to each class
-freshmen and drunk bus, people vomiting every night on the drunk bus is getting old.
-cops, giving under ages and busting people for drugs instead of worrying about crime.
-people from other schools coming to ours to party, they act like it’s their first time drinking and get our Greek system in trouble.
-school blaming the Greek system for other peoples mistakes and also coming up with new rules every semester, we can’t control other peoples’ (GDIs’) decisions
-geeds, think they are better yet sadly mistaken, I don’t have problems with normal people.
-books for classes, I’m going to try out this new renting books thing that my school just started last semester.

Underrated:
-dorms freshmen year, I did random roommate because I’m the only one in my school to go here but we clicked and I couldn’t ask for a better roommate, I won’t be living in the dorms after frosh year as I’ll be living in a mansion with my Fraternity Brothers. I’m also pretty good friends with the people on my floor.
-Greek Life, We control the school when it comes to social events, student government, and etc. It pays to be apart of the system. I have friends from very diverse backgrounds and rolling deep with my bros is boss.
-meal plan, costs like $700 for the 3rd level which is plenty enough for me (it goes up to 6 for the fattys).
-sports, going to a D1 school is amazing
-athletic facilities, we have amazing gyms spread throughout campus.
-clubs, our school has a club for everything. I’m hoping to join a couple this semester.
-downtown, a lot of bars downtown so I can’t wait to turn 21.
-parties, big and meet a lot of people and they get crazy
-living in a mansion, I practically lived here last semester going back to the dorms at like 5-6 in the morning. It would be awesome to live here with my best friends.
-friends and Brothers, people who you can count on (me and my Brothers have gotten each other out of some sticky situations and also rolling deep is pretty fun.
-pledging, so much fun and can’t wait to experience it from the other side and also hope to become a mentor.
-holidays, a great reason to party and also girls to throw inhibitions to the wind.
-sylly week, a great reason to binge drink a week straight.
-spring break, I heard it’s awesome and my Brothers and I are getting free lodging and meals for a week at our location, thanks to our Alumni.
-philanthropy, feels good to help out.

I feel like there’s so much more that I can’t think of at the moment. I love my school and people wonder why we have such stereotypically “optimistic” views of it when they hear about us, well you have to live it to know what were talking about.

Underrated:
- Diversity
(But maybe it is because I’ve never seen so many Asians in my life)

Underrated:
- the amount of people you get to know during orientation week and its impact on the rest of your whole college experience
- the importance of being a member of as many clubs as possible
- that it is worth taking a (seemingly) less interesting course taught by a good professor than taking a course that sounds awesome but is taught by a worse prof.
- sleep:)

Overrated:
- where you live on campus (before starting school you make a huge deal out of where you live but when you’re already there, it doesn’t really matter as far as you have the right people around you)
- location of campus (this is probably not always true but it is at my current college. Most people were worried about being in the middle of nowhere, but none of us ended up actually finding this a problem:)

You’re ridiculous.

Wow, I didn’t even see this before. This is ridiculously stupid on so many levels.

Can college students who have posted on this thread please post what college you are at? Thanks :)
