Overseas Internship in Singapore --- Worth it?

Hi All,

Just some quick background. I am currently a junior with aspirations to work in Human Resources upon graduation. I have never had a formal internship before.

I am in a bit of a bind. I was offered a possible opportunity to go to Singapore through my school's study abroad department as a Student Intern, in which my role would be to promote and recruit for the program during the spring, in addition to going over there while the students are there for the summer and plan events for the students.

All my expenses would be paid for sans flight, but I am not sure if the "overseas experience" will really be better for me and my resume than not accepting it and searching for a more traditional, HR internship closer to home. I am really torn because I know lots of companies eat up overseas experience but I am worried that the position itself might not be the best for me career-wise. However, if I can't find a summer internship elsewhere and bypass this opportunity, then I am most definitely screwed.

I was curious if anyone could shed some light on this, and give me any advice on what they think. I am worried about passing the opportunity to go abroad up when I don't have anything else set up yet.

Thanks again.

Singapore is awesome. I’m from there! It would be good on your resume, if you are going into HR, to have some diverse, international experience of cultures, I think. Singapore is like a hybrid of East meets West. It’s very culturally interesting, and this would help your professional experience. Which college do you go to that offers a program to Singapore?

Hi Mamaroneck,

That’s awesome that you’re from there, I actually have been to Singapore before on study abroad. I go to University at Buffalo, and I am being considered for this specific position because of my experience studying abroad.

My main point of concern is that I am worried about whether prospective employers will value my international intern experience more so than if I were to stay in New York and do a more traditional HR internship there.
