Overview of New Paltz

northeastmom, have you visited NP? The whole village is in walking distance(4-8 blocks) MY D and her friends have not had any problem getting housing on campus. Last year BF had to triple up, but didn't mind as he got paid for it! The housing my D has been in, Lenape and Deyo, have been failrly nice as dorms go. She has a suite with 3 bedrooms, living room and bath for 6 girls. Not sure what percentage live on campus, but I think most do. The newer dorms were built in like 03 I think. I would say that one thing NP is missing in comparison to other schools is a "townhouse" type set up for upperclassman. They do have quite a few suites, but nothing upscale like some other schools we have seen.

No, we have not visited yet. My son is a HS junior. We have not visited any SUNYs yet. I was under the impression that upperclassmen move off campus. As parents, my H and I do not want to pay OOS tuition, 10,000/year for just a room off campus + a car (insurance, up keep, gas etc.) + food. This all adds up to a lot more money. I am trying to get a picture of what the costs are on top of tuition, food, and books, if my son decided that he must move off campus after sophomore year. Also, trying to understand what we could be stuck with if in the beginning of sophomore year he wanted us to sign a lease for his junior year, and then his plans change (ie: he decides to study abroad, or transfer). I have seen some people backed into such a corner. I don't want to get into this type of situation. I would rather pay for on campus housing for 4 years, but at a lot of schools the students want apartment style living off campus.

northeastmom - no, I meant that the apartments near campus are in demand and hard to get, but there is plenty of other housing within walking distance to the school in the way of houses around campus where rooms are rented out to students.

Lilymoon, thanks. Do most juniors and senios move off campus? How about sophomores?

Some kids choose to move off campus and some don't. My son knows a junior who moved off campus this year and a sophomore that stayed on.

Thanks. I think that I would need to assume that junior and senior year would be spent off campus. Then if my son decided to stay on, it would be bonus. I believe that living off campus for the average student (spending habits vary) will cost more, but this is just my opinion.

D is home for the weekend and says lots of Jr and Sr do move off, but lots do stay on. There are apartments in town, off of Main st. there is a complex, just before the bridge over the river turn left!

I did look on the off campus housing board today and saw some rooms in houses available for $380 and $409 a month without utilities. So maybe prices are coming down.
