Owl Days 2009!

Never mind, I just got the e-mail! Unfortunately, I doubt that I can attend Owl Days because I have an orchestra contest on April 8... Is it possible to arrive late? I was really looking forward to staying overnight. I guess I will call and ask tomorrow.

Has anyone been able to find a low hotel rate? I’ve tried calling and the Best Western and Marriot were all $139 (with the Rice discount).

Really? Last year we got rates at about $90. Ask them if that is the best that they can do. The Best WEstern is usually cheaper by about $10, and has less comfortable beds. Marriot is more comfortable!

Anyone know how long it will take to get to Rice from Bush Intercontinental Airport by SuperShuttle? I am debating on taking either SuperShuttle or a taxi for 2 people. Supershuttle = $27 plus $7 for a guest, so around $34. Taxi would be around $50. But my flight arrives at 1:52PM on Wednesday, so I am missing the classes, activities fair/lunch, academic panels & facilities tours, probably campus tour (though there are classes/tours on Thursday too, thankfully). I am hoping we get to Rice by 3PM, but if SuperShuttle takes a long time we will just take taxi cause I don’t want to miss out on too much…

And also, does anyone know exactly how sleeping arrangements are made? Are we like, sleeping on the floor of our host’s house and so we really need to bring a sleeping bag? I hate my sleeping bag cause it’s huuge, and I only wanted to bring a carryon on the plane :T

^Yeah, you’re gonna have to bring a sleeping bag. I suppose you could buy a sleeping bag in Houston/Rice. This way you could avoid the second carry-on fee and the burden of extra luggage on your way there (if there is one).

I haven’t flown in a while… you’re only allowed one carry on? So would it be okay if I bought a big backpack with my sleeping bag and just stuffed my purse and everything else into it?

You’re allowed one carry-on and one “personal item.” So you could have your backpack and your purse and be fine. :)

pinkie1105: Have you contacted someone about arriving late? I’m thinking about doing the same because I have a conflict that day, and I really want to stay overnight (I live in Houston). My friend called to ask and the person who answered told her to go to an Admit Day…

I’m going with my friend, and he said his mom called and the person said what you miss in the morning you will make up the next day (I think the important things are attending classes and the campus tour). I’m not too sure if the activities fair and academic panels/facilities tours are super important though…

Is it OK if we don’t bring a sleeping bag…? Like maybe just a blanket and pillow? I just really don’t want to have the hassle of having a checked bag for the plane ride (there is now a fee for that, WHEN DID THAT HAPPEN)

If you’re fine with sleeping on the cold, hard floor, I guess a sleeping bag isn’t necessary. It’s all at your own discretion and priorities.

its only one night, sleep isn’t entirely necessary.

There’s a good chance you won’t need a sleeping bag. Lots of rooms have couches you can crash on.

How big is the personal item allowed to be? For example, could I bring a sleeping bag as my carry-on and my backpack as my personal item? I hate checking in stuff, because about half the flights I’ve been on I’ve had a bag lost/arrive late.

Yea that should be ok. Generally when I’m flying home on breaks I bring a medium sized duffel bag as my carry-on and my backpack as my personal item. The carryon has specific measurements, I’m sure you can find them online, because they have to fit into the overheads. The personal item is supposed to fit under the seat and backpacks do and they are on the list of approved personal items, which you can also find online.

If I’m flying in without a parent the day before, should I request to sleep in the dorms that night? Because hotels won’t let me stay if I’m under 21 without a parent.
