OWL DAYS was AWESOME. I’m sending in my deposit now. That is all.

It was REALLY AWESOME. I have yet to visit other schools, but I’ve never seen a more inviting social scene.

Thanks blackeyedsusan, that’s exactly what I meant, but I couldn’t put it forth that eloquently.

i agree, it was awesome! icing on the cake for me, really.

and as for the whole TA/problem set review, prospies were given a list of ALL classes that fell into those time slots, and there were about 2 pages of classes for each period, so to expect all of them to prepare something special would be ridiculous and impractical.

i managed to get to 2 classes, roman art & architecture on wednesday, and thermodynamics today. the first one was pretty boring, a lot more interpretation of art than what i was expecting. the thermo class was mostly above my head but the professor was engaging and presented the lecture in a way that i could follow along, even if i couldn’t understand it all.

thermo goes over my head too :S

Owl Days was loads of fun, but bittersweet.
I wish that they could have figured out a better time for us to go, rather than the week before finals.

I really wanted to show up to Owl Days but could not afford it :(

I found everything CC has said about Rice to be completely true. Everyone was beyond nice and it was awesome. Any doubts I had about Rice are gone.

yeah. I agree that the timing was rather poor for Owl Days

When were decisions sent? Was it last week? If it was then the only reasonable days to have Owl Days was this week…You can’t have it next week because it’s the last week of class…everyone will be extremely busy, you can’t have it the weeks after that because you have finals, everyone leaving, graduation.

Glad most of you had a good time!! Owl days was definitely the deciding factor for me when I visited last year. I was sorry that I couldn’t host this time around due to putting on an event last night that I’d organized and having an exam this morning. Still made it to a couple of the prospie events/parties, though!

Regarding the timing, it’s true that it’s not the ideal time for Rice students, but it’s really the only feasible time after admissions decisions were announced. I wish, though, that they would change it back to Owl Weekend, which would help a lot.

Some may disagree with me on this, but I don’t think class visits are really all that meaningful. No matter where you go, there will be awesome professors and there will be mediocre professors. Intro-level classes will be large and upper-level classes will be smaller but difficult to understand as a prospie. There will be classes taught by faculty and classes taught by post-docs or TAs. There will be classes that are having a boring day (i.e. reviewing problem set) and classes that are having a riveting lecture. Point is, picking the right class is a crapshoot, and what do you really learn about Rice from attending one session of one class taught by one professor in one department?

Well, I agree with you that going to just one class probably won’t tell you much, but Owl Days gives you an opportunity to attend several. Is that not true anymore? It seems that Marsie Dotes’ daughter only went to one. When my daughter attended Owl Days, she sat in on at least 4 classes. The same was true at several other colleges we checked out before she made her decision. Ideally, I think you should try to sit in on classes of several different sizes, levels and in different departments.

^ yes it’s still true. I believe prospies had two (?) pages of classes to attend

Yes – there were two pages for Wed. and two pages for Thursday. A student could easily fit 4 classes in, unless they arrived late or departed early.

I slept in on Thursday and missed the first class, but I still got to sit in 3 classes, which was great!

^I slept in on thursday and missed BOTH classes.
One of my wednesday classes was terrible, and the other was really great. I don’t think it’s useful to judge the entire curriculum based on a few randomly selected hour-long classes.

but yeah owl days were awesome(!!!) It’s really strange to think that I might have met people from college confidential…

Most of the prospies I met at Owl Day were really down-to-earth and seemed to be pretty chill (which was of course nice) and all of the current rice students I met were also AWESOME very helpful and kind so that was great too!
I just had a question about er a few of the prospies actually :3 There were say…5-8 that had really condescending attitudes sort of braggarts? I met this one girl who kept telling me she was “stupid” because she ONLY got into Stanford and another guy who kept saying that Rice sucks and Ivies are the only places to be…you kind of get my drift right? I also met a few people who hoped to pursue pre-business or pre-med for, imo, 1-dimensional reasons such as “oh my parents make me” and people who only cared about getting A’s in classes as op posed to actually learning something. There was another kid who said that since Rice “isn’t a good school,” she’s goign to be #1 and better than everyone else if she ends up coming here. Like I said, most of the prospies I met were super nice, as were the current Rice students, but well I gotta say, those 5-8 prospies make me feel a little hesitant towards the school–are there many people like this at Rice–because well yeah since these prospies ARE my future classmates…it’s got me a bit worried
Yes I do know that there are manymanymany intelligent people at Rice, and I do know that a significant # of students turn down Stanford/Ivies for Rice, but it was the attitude of those 5-8 prospies that really put me off. I get that you’re smart, yes, but not all of us got into Ivies and it makes me a bit upset to hear that Rice “sucks” since it is one of my top choices…and the arrogance ayyyy! I hope you guys get what I’m saying!
Thanks, any replies are appreciated!

Christine, there are all kinds of people in the world and some are not as nice as others. You met some of those during Owl Day. But do not let them affect your decision to attend Rice which is one of the best University in the country. You will find those type of students in other schools as well.

The arrogance will wear off after they get their grades back freshman year. Don’t worry about it.

I love shooting down the prospies who are bragging about all their high school accomplishments. You just tell them, “Dude…nobody cares,” and it shuts them up pretty quickly.

Christine,
I think I met the moms of the students you are talking about : )
Christian is right that you’ll find these people everywhere. Some of the nicest kids I know are now students at Rice.
