Owl days

Personally, I'm super excited about this and I've tried to put off an Owl Days discussion as long as possible so that the inevitable wait wouldn't be so bad. However, after receiving a letter about the event in April, I can wait no longer. So what are everyone's thoughts about Owl Days? I've heard about it but all the information I have is very vague. Is there anyone who's attended the overnight program that has any information? Thanks in advance!

I can give you a little information as a former Owl (weekend/days) host. It used to be Owl Weekend, where the prospies come in on thursday, see classes on Friday, have fun with us on Friday night and Saturday and leave Saturday/Sunday.

How good Owl Days depends on who your host is, to some degree. If your host sucks (it happens) find someone else. Tag along with another prospie and their host if you can. Also, sometimes your host will be busy, so use this time to check out classes, just wander the campus, visit the library etc. Get the feel of what it would be to be at Rice.

I hosted 9 prospective students my freshman year (some assigned and some adopted). Wee bit too much, but it was a ton of fun. All of them came to Rice, which was nice.

Use Owl Days to get the best possible snapshot of what Rice is. I would recommend seeing a few classes and talking afterwards to the professor. Don’t spend the whole time in class though. We all know Rice has good professors. What is key is how Rice feels to you. Spend time talking to people, in the dorms etc. imagine yourself living here. Go to parties (if you like) and hang out with people.

My 2c on Rice is this: Rice is an excellent school in terms of academics and prestige. It may not be the best fit you everyone socially in terms of atmosphere. The location may not do it for you. This is true for all universities in their own way. Make sure you will be happy here for 4 years.

Cheers

Congrats, jz, on your wonderful ED news that means no more waiting. On Owl Days, Rice will come alive in 3D for you – guaranteed ringside seats! You’ll meet lots of Rice students, see for yourself how accessible the profs are, squint at each residential college and wonder where you’ll be living … you’ll buy something from the campus store, get a free t-shirt, and help other visiting prospies decide which college to choose. Antarius calls it a snapshot, maybe it’s more like a video as you walk around campus, explore the nooks, get comfortable in the serveries, listen to music, and take it all in. Maybe your host won’t be perfect, but it really won’t matter with everyone else you’re meeting …

Thank you for the replies! I feel like I have a better sense of what to expect. The experience will be great I’m sure, as all of my other experiences with Rice have been. Once again, thank you.

Sure. Just remember, try to get the full student experience. And that will mean less sleep, so be prepared!
