I'll be going on the 21st-22nd!

ahh, the weather is gorgeous today. I hope it lasts a few days for y'all!

Bring an airmattress if you have room; some of the rooms do not have a couch for you to crash on.....

arent you supposed to bring a sleeping bag?

which leads me to my next questions: would it be too hot for a sleeping bag there?

No, the residential colleges are air conditioned. Have fun!

yeah, definitely bring your own sleeping arrangements. There is no guarantee that your host will have a couch or futon, sadly. I'd feel really bad if my prospie didn't bring anything to sleep on, b/c there's definitely nowhere to sleep.

soooo, do the dorm rooms have carpeting? I've been looking into all these wonderful places to live, but no one seems to say yes or no. It's probably no, but optimism is nice :D

Most don't. Trust me, that's a good thing. Carpets have decades upon decades of random ickiness soaked up into them. That's not an issue with vinyl or hardwood.

heh... my room has carpeting, and I'm in Baker's Old Wing... which means I have three quarters of a century of "ickiness" in my carpet. Actually, it's not that bad. After we vacuum, it seems clean enough. There are no stains, and it smells ok. It's really not that bad either way. Carpet is quieter and softer, but its impossible to sweep, so you need a vacuum. No biggie.

Are Prospies allowed to sit in on whichever classes they'd like? Does anyone have one or two they'd like to recommend for Monday 9-12am, preferably in the Sciences or English?

I'm pretty sure they can sit in on whatever they want, although they'll often go to classes with their hosts. In the sciences, I'd recommend honors physics on Monday at 9:00. Well, actually, that might not be the best class to sit in on for a single lecture, but it's certainly a great class overall. Maybe somebody else has better suggestions.

how long does it usually take from HOU to Rice using supershuttle or similar method?

also, I am wondering if there's anything that I definitely should experience in downtown Houston area since I will be flying out of houston around 5 pm on tuesday..
(i definitely don't want to just sit in the airport for the whole time)

What to do experience before leaving Houston:
1) Go see the Lucy exhibit at the Houston Museum of Natural Science - it's spectacular!
2) Museum of Fine Arts, Houston - Pompeii

idk...Does anyone have anything else to add?

I was also going to suggest a visit to the museums (one light rail stop away) -- either the Museum of Fine Arts Houston or the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Other that that, you might want to explore Rice Village some.

Can you choose to hang around campus longer? You could also walk across the street and visit Hermann Park and the zoo. :)

You can do whatever you want. If your host is cool with it, you can technically stay for the whole week (you'll just have to figure out your own meals).

anyone want to post about how their time was earlier this week?

I had an amazing time this week. I stayed at Martel which evidently is "not" a college and my host was really friendly. Although I did not keep a tally of how many times people welcomed me to Rice, I met about 20 students, all who were enthusiastic about being at Rice. They give you the total Rice expereience from eating with your college to view some to the ec's that they have. I really enjoyed myself and I even caught my parents telling others that they'd see them in August. I still have some more looking to do but I'm pretty sold on going to Rice.

Hundreds stranded by American Airlines cancellations at Houston airport | LOCAL NEWS | KHOU.com | News for Houston, Texas Hmm... I wonder if any of the prospective students are stranded due to the AA flight cancellations? I hope they all got home before this happened, but it seems that some might have been affected. :(

Our family really loved Owl Days -- Rice is a thriving community, professors,
students, neighborhood visitors intertwining so nicely. Some great classes, nice food in Sammy's on campus, loved our stay at Marriott Hospital Center (never rented a car, walked to campus or used free hotel shuttle). Enjoyed Ruggles and D'Amicos in Rice Village, which felt like a relaxed version of Georgetown. Nicest friendliest people. Everyone we talked to at the airport is so proud of Rice -- for good reason, too -- world class school with a comfy feel. Looks pretty solid here, too.
