Owl Weekend

So who's going to Owl Weekend?

Also, does anyone know anything about the activities planned? The brochure that came with the admission packet didn't going into very much detail about what we're actually going to be doing.

I'll be there. I'm not sure about the activities planned, but I hear that you really can do whatever you want, so it's very open and up to you.

I went to it last year, and will be hosting a student this year.
Owl Weekend is lots of fun. You get to meet profs, go to classes, go to parties, there are concerts and sporting events (the baseball team will be in Hawaii, unfortunately), and lots of things to do. Dr. Debakey is speaking on campus that weekend, and the Philharmonics (a cappella group) is having a concert which should be great. There will also be LOTS of food everywhere. Definitely come, it will be great.

I went to Vision weekend and it was pretty cool.. I hear it'll basically be the same thing for Owl Weekend. We got to attend classes.. we ate at the residential colleges.. my host took us down to Rice Village just to hang out.

You can basically do anything you want, but it's a really good opportunity to get a feel for what the Rice atmosphere is like.

And! The weather should be good this weekend. crosses fingers

wooot!! im going to owl wknd. rawr!! which means that i'm only going to school one day next week. : D.
sooo what exactly does good weather mean? in oregon, good weather = sunny but not that hot (so still jeans weather)

I'm going. Damn i booked my tickets late. its $670 a person. WoW! The worst part is that just 24 hours earlier they told me $306!!!

Good Weather (Houston): When the air is cool, yet there is not a cloud in sight, but just the sun shining over the lush green grass.

Okay-Good Weather: The same as above, but with some clouds.

Okay Weather: The same as "Good Weather," but with some clouds and a hot temperature.

Eh-Okay Weather: Cloudy and, thus, no sun, and the temperature is either cool or hot.

Bad Weather: Rain, rain, and even more rain.

catz - you might want to bring shorts - upper 70s and low to mid 80s are likely.

okay! thanks jenskate and nspeds.
omg. you mean i actually might get to see sun?? living in rainy/cloudy oregon has almost made me forget what cloudless skies look like...

I don't get how they expect us to have flights booked BEFORE we register... I want to go, but I don't want to actually book the tickets before they tell me that there is actually space. is there a big chance that i don't get a spot (just registered now)?

I'm from Houston so deciding to go is a twenty dollar thing with a 20 minute drive, and I won't even miss school b/c I have a 3-day weekend, but I'm fairly certain I don't want to go to Rice. Do you think I should go to Owl Weekend anyways?

Why do you not want to go?

I'm leaning 75% Stanford and 25% Rice. But hey, why not go? It'll be fun, and I might find out that I like Rice a lot better.

about, you should get a spot, they really want as many people as possible to come and will make room for you if you register before the deadline (today @ 5pm CT)

thanks jen. ticket prices for domestic flights go up almost by the hour, so i went ahead and risked booking anyway. That i'll probably be okay is a relief. Btw, im wondering, when they say continental has discounted fares for owl weekend, just how much discounted? because AA was half the price of continental to start with, so i just booked on AA without calling continental abot the special fares (this was 3 in the morning).

I called Continental and they said it was something like a 2% discount. Bleh. AA was still a couple hundred dollars less for me.

Southwest was cheapest for me, even after the Continental discount

I just had a lovely mad dash after finding out I had 10 minutes left to submit my application to owl weekend- hopefully I had the right ID number... I told them I was sorry if it was wrong, but I threw away the envelope with the number, and it's not in the admission letter. :(

I just got done booking my flight and registering for Owl weekend a little earlier. My flight was only $238 roundtrip...I don't see how some of you are getting $600+. Are you from abroad?

what service did you use? i used orbitz and was able to get $357 roundtrip one-stop total tickets, and, being a new yorker, that's damn cheap (much cheaper than i expected anyway - continental was $700+). until a month ago, i lived in the Philippines, and i tell you, $600 is nowhere near enough for a one-week notice flight from abroad. good lord, the expense.
