heh.. yah really glad i went to o-wknd.. hey i had a question tho..

are we allowed to request colleges at all?? RD people might be able to cuz you guys dont have to turn in stuff til may 1st.. but what happens if i applied ED and already turned in housing info? i forgot what the questions on the housing info sheet were... iuno.. i really liked my college and the ppl there

As was mentioned above, the only people that are able to request that they are either in or not in a certain college are those who had relatives in that particular college. Other than that, you will be assigned.

With regard to the "roomate" question.. I just filled out D's college information form yesterday and if I am not mistaken there is a place on there to request a roomate.. there is also a place to request that someone be in the same college as you but NOT your roomate. I noticed this because D met a girl she felt comfortable with at Owl Weekend and I said maybe you should have asked her about rooming together and she said No, our hosts told us that this was a bad idea.. and gave a lot of examples of people who did this and were very unhappy.. the hosts said Rice does a better job based on the questions they ask.. ie late sleeper, partier, etc. But, I did like the idea of requesting the same COLLEGE as the other girl to have someone you know close but not in the same room.. unfortuately, she didn't recall her last name.. just her first name and where she was from so oh, well.

I could be wrong - but I am pretty sure you can request to be in the same college with someone AND be their roommate or NOT be their roommate. My DD requested to be the same college as someone (you can't pick the college, just to be in the same college - and that person has to request the same thing.) And she had the choice to be roommates or not roommates with that person. They chose not to be roommates. So unless it has changed since last year, you CAN request to be a roommate and in the same college as one other person. HTH!

p.s. Ooops.. I missed those other posts. Someone else already answered this!
P.P.S. DD was a non-drinker, is now a very light drinker. She has no trouble finding lots of friends and lots to do.

jenskate 1: Again, your insight into Rice has been invaluable; hate to see you give this up; think about the coming Rice prospects.
Anyway, thanks for sharing your Owl Weekend experience and your candid comments about drinking.
My S was there, and the pervasive drinking kind of turned him off, although he did think the drunken golf game was funny. Still, he couldn't help compare to another school, which has a better handle on controlling drinking on campus.
He also said it was very noisy (for studying), and that his host pretty much left it up to the prospects on what to do. Three of them pretty much roamed the campus by themselves; maybe it's their fault for not aggressively pursuing what was going on; maybe it's the host's fault for not making himself more available.
All in all, I think he was a little disappointed in the whole experience. He liked the classes he sat in on, so that's a plus, and Rice's reputation is spotless. So, I'm hoping Rice remains among is top choices as the clock winds down.

Jenskate1: The posts begging for you to stay are automated, created by the CC server- college confidential gets revenue from its ads, and much like a tobacco company, is trying to keep a lock on its addicts.

Just kidding though. Your posts are helpful.

OMG, that would be so crazy. I'm speechless.

Tdad - your son should realize that part of the loudness while he was on campus was because it was owl weekend, and a lot of people were not studying. You should have seen the campus on Sunday - much quieter. Beer golf I don't mind. It makes me happy since when you see people playing beer golf, that generally means people are kicking back and chilling out on a warm friday afternoon.

I had so much fun at Owl Weekend, and my hostess was the greatest! She was a freshman rep and really involved with her college. We went to the philharmonic concert, house of pie @ midnight, classes (omg the bios 202 teacher is crazy cool!), even that boring panel session where we toured approx ten science labs, activities fair, and jamfest. She was also really cool about doing what we wanted to do; we went to the sid party for about 5 minutes (she told my fellow prospie and I to pull our ears when we wanted to leave) and the 5-man for a few minutes.

Also, the day before my rice/baylor interview I wanted to get a lot of sleep (7-8 hours because I can't function otherwise) and the jamfest was going on (great but LOUD) so she let me sleep in her room on an extra bed instead of the commons room; the doors are nice and THICK so they blocked out most of the music. Also, her friend gave me ear plugs.

So, I discovered that people at Rice are really nice and that pie at midnight is beautiful.

I went on Thursday night, too. I'm from VA, and I'm deciding between Rice, UVA, chicago, and georgetown, although it's really between rice and uva at this point. Were you with the group with the tall guy from the basketball team who ordered the monte cristo (deep fried club sandwich)?

Yes! And we talked about the political atmosphere at rice. And in the car we talked about how there's a lot of crime in JHU.

Maybe I heard Chicago instead of JHU...I can't remember. I think I brought up JHU because one of my friends was deciding between UVA and JHU, so I thought that it would be relevant to choosing between your batch of schools.
